It ( assault weapon, assault rifle, assault pistol etc ) is well defined in US law and some states. What problem are you having with understanding the official terminology? YOU might not want to call your device that but that doesnt mean the government hasnt defined it for you. Select fire capability has nothing to do with it. Those are machine guns according to the US Code.

All of my assault rifles use silencers.
There is a distinct difference between the terms "Assault Weapon" and "Assault Rifle". The former is a political term invented to facilitate a partial gun ban. The exact definition varies by jurisdiction. The latter is an actual term used by manufacturers. The first reference of which I'm aware is the German "Sturmgewehr" which literally translates as "Storm Rifle". Storm as in storming or assaulting a hill or other strategic location. That kind of assault, not the "beating up your neighbor" kind of assault. A mid-length, intermediate caliber, select fire rifle meant for running and maneuvering with, often while shooting. Select fire is a specific part of the definition.

So when someone in the press or a politician uses the term "Assault Rifle" they are probably misusing it, whether through malice, ignorance or apathy. When someone uses the term "Assault Weapon", it very much depends on the context. When someone uses the term "Assault Pistol", they're probably just being funny, derisive or ignorant.
