I always listen when I open a can. There is a distinctive whoosh as the vacuum of an intact can is released. No whoosh means no vacuum, meaning the can has been breeched and the contents are possibly dangerous, potentially critically dangerous to eat.

By the way, not all bacteria growing in canned food have an obvious odor. Botulism, one of the most dangerous, does not.

I rotate my canned food and my wife has it organized by year so we are eating 2021 canned food now although. The spam which expired over a year ago it is still good. My wife does not eat spam that much but I like two thin slabs fried and then put on fried eggs.
