MAGS. For the love of god buy magazines NOW. We will see legislative action banning them despite our best efforts.

Buy'em cheap and stack them deep.
Dont fall for magpul being a do-all.
Invest in some good USGI type mags (aluminum or steel, I prefer aluminum)
They store better and can take more than a drop or two when loaded unlike Pmags.

After that, shoot more than anything. All those fancy gizmos tacticool guys like Costa push are fun.. But nothing beats the fundimentals. Practice before you buy things to make you a better shooter.. Because in the end only shooting will do that.

Mags and ammo. You have an optic and irons. Aside from a sling thats all you really need. That and a car full of mags.

I agree!!!! And please stay away from the Blackhawk metal mags, Google the reviews.

D&S. Makes a GREAT metal mag!

It's weird, when I was building my evil black rifle I put on a MOE pistol grip which I like...
Now doing a pistola with a complete PSA lower and the standard GI pistol grip feels perfect for my hands. I practice handguns with both hands. Eagerly awaiting the complete upper with a melonite barrel to complete the build.
Have the optic, back up sights will be steel or aluminum.
Polymer sights have never seemed a good option as I am more in to surviving the ZA rather than being tacticool. Plus my budget is more M3 grease gun than match grade M14.
For the drop test he should have included an A2 comparo, too.

This place has been great to get ideas from - thanks for all the great feedback I've received since becoming a more active poster.

I have a beginner Anderson MFG AR15 (AM-15) multi-cal that I'm just starting to put some updates into. Thus far I have put the quad rail hand guard on so I can prep for a tactical light and hand rail, the Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 Red Dot and Magpull MBUS Gen II backup sights.

I talked to a local gun shop and got some ideas but now I'm hoping for some references to a good choice in tactical flashlight, hand rail and even grip replacement.

For flashlights I'm looking at a couple options on Amazon.

UTG Defender Series:

And the smaller Streamlight: http://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-6..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1DCF9Z7YE33Y48KQXDN8

Does anyone have good suggestions on tactical lights? I think (without experience) I'm leaning towards one that doesn't have the hand grip attachment for activating the light.

I went with a JETBeam JET 3M PRO light (no remote pressure switch) with the JETBeam V12 Long Stainless Steel Tactical Strike Bezel option, mounted to the rail using a VLTOR SMQ-OCG Off Set Scout QD Quick Detach Flashlight Mount. I like the flexibility that setup gives me. The VLTOR mount is stupid expensive, but the quality is OMG great and the design is unique with additional value for quick detach and quickly removing the light from the mount without tools should circumstances dictate that you must have a hand light by itself. I also have a pistol-mounted Streamlight TLR-1 HL that I can mount on the AR rail if needed.

You can go as crazy as you want or as basic as you want I went simple but useful. Basic Poly Tac from Stream light with a Magpul mount thumb operated high, strobe and low. They take a beating and keep working.
