hmm...doesn't sound very pracitical. Consequently, I'll have to try it. Picked up a few parts to get started on it today on a spur of the moment decision. Anyone have experience with this? I'll be using a 10.5" barrel

I considered an AR 308 SBR as I'm not sure I'd want to shoot it without the buttstock. I looked at a 12.5" barrel and even that seems to have a huge drop in velocity. With a 10.5", you might be better off to buy a 30 carbine with a folding stock.

Of course, I respect your decision do 'just do it' because you can ;)

hmm very good point...or may be less headache to just build standard rifle. Now I just need to figure out what to do w/the 10.5" barrel.....

It sounds like a very fun project! Post a video or two if you decide to follow through with it.

it would definitely be an interesting project. Now I'm a bit torn between that, and the lack of pracitcality though.....well I guess since I do have a 10.5" barrel it's either go forward w/the pistol build or use it as a tent peg lol...decisions, decisions...

DSA was making these. Don't know if they sold any or if it even made it to production.

A .300 Blackout pistol might be a fun one to build.

I don't trust a short gas system with the AR design. Pressures are too high when the bolt starts moving. The HK91 system has no gas system so it works on any barrel length.

That's what I was thinking too, although I'd SBR it and plan for a suppressor in the future. I think 10" is about the ideal length for that caliber. A 308 will lose too much velocity and will probably be plunking them out at sub 7.62x39 velocity, but if the enemy is within 25yds you can fry them with the fireball from the muzzle or at least render them deaf.
