You do have an early 604 upper. Pre-1964

Thanks for the info! Honestly I'm a neophyte when it comes to the M16 series... Arisakas I can quote you chapter and verse - M16's not so much...

I have 9-10 of those early receivers and had 89 of the later version.

I am looking for one that has no arrow/R on the receiver (601) and one that is indented (602)

Yours was originally on an Airforce contract rifle.

No kidding!!! We've got at least 16" of snow so far... it's a mess out there... fortunately I have the Jeep - drop it in 4 wheel low, and I get there!
