A hunting partner of mine apendix carries a G43. While he was climbing over a log, his thigh pushed the gun out of his IWB holster. took 2 hoirs of backtracking to find it...on opening day of deer season.

the right thing to do i imagine, is turn it over to police or better yet call them and totally inconvenience them because you wouldnt wanna get nailed with a 941 violation

I would assume you would have to leave it as it lies, and call the LEOs. Or else you would be taking procession and be in violation.

Me personally would report to local LEO it, just as any other lost property. I believe after a certain period of time yo can claim it, if the owner has not come forward. The gun could be listed as lost or stolen and if found in your possession at the very least you'd have some explaining to do, at most you could be hooked and booked, then invest a small fortune in a lawyer.

And I have to say, what a fine upstanding community we have here. What a great way to represent gun owners.

I would turn it in to Law Enforcement .

Then at least it wouldn't be picked up and used in a crime.
Or someone comes along and "plays" with it , shooting themselves or someone else.
