Anyone have experience getting your firearms back from LE agencies after being recovered?

Just thought I'd ask if anyone here had any first hand experiences on how they dealt with LE agencies in regards to getting their firearms back after being stolen. Anyone retain an attorney to make it easier? I'm hoping the WSP (WA State Patrol) will come through with my case, which is 3 years old as I'm hoping the detective who was assigned to the case will give me solid as what's in store for me.
