There was some guy writing for Precision Shooting magazine, who used to go out in the boonies in Idaho and shoot at juniper trees at 1000 yards. He used a S&W 629 and a Freedom Arms 83, both chambered in .44 Mag. The FA gun was quite a bit easier IIRC.

The last two long range hand guns i had were a s&w model 14 and a Contender in 30/30. The 14 would hit a 9" pie tin at 100 yds (had to "hold over" quite a bit). The contender was scary accurate at any range with a 10" octagon barrel and iron sights, fist sized groups at 100yds. If my eyeballs weren't so screwed up, I'd do better.

Before you guys poo poo on the idea of a contender for defense, I could put 5 shots into a target in less than 15 seconds. Even if I couldn't hit the target the noise and blast would scare the hell out of the target.
