Thanks for the info! Good to know there shouldn't be any problems for hunting once I get a good load figured out.
As a very general rule....
Most rifles shoot well with a powder load of about 20 or 30 grains over the caliber...
So...a .54 rifle may like a powder load of 75 -85 grains of powder.

My load for my .54 Hawken Rifle is :
80 grains of 2F , a .15 patch and a .530 round ball.
I use this load for almost all of my shooting and hunting needs.
I have taken :
Grouse
Coyote
Antelope
Deer
Elk
And Bear with this loading.

Leave me out of this....

I only did it twice. :s0092:

Both times I pulled the nipple and dribbled in some FFFG to pop the ball out. :s0023:
I, for once, will exercise some restraint and not touch that one...... despite the easy setup. :s0140:

A lot of shooters use a plastic or fiberglas rod at the range, rather than the wooden one because if you put too much side-load on a wooden rod, it can break and shove a big splinter or the broken shaft itself into your hand. Out in the field, you are not trying to reload as fast (or at least shouldn't be).
