Green Diamond just posted these signs today at my honey hole pit in the Kennedy Creak area of Thurston County… This DOES NOT affect all of GD lands.

Thanks Caveman Jim for your 10 year stewardship to this area. :s0124:

Really sad how many shooters turn nice places into landfill's. Then of course scream when the place gets posted like this. God bless those guys who on their own time and dime go out and clean up the messes to try to keep more places from being closed.

Slob shooters give all us responsible shooters a bad name, just like slob fishermen.

There is a Trash no Land pit cleanup at the Triangle pit this Saturday that's near here but that's on state land. It gets trashed 100 times worse and cleanups continue but does no good when the slobs come back the next day.
People suck!!!

Thanks for the report, Jim. Kinda surprised, due to the fact Green Diamond doesn't charge an access fee like others do.

Have you heard a reason why? I'm wondering if they may be about to do logging or equipment staging, which means they will probably reopen when done.

If permanently closed, they should give you a key for all the work you've done there!

Bill, I just sent them this email, will check in when I hear anything.

"Hello, I'm Caveman Jim, I noticed new signs put up yesterday at the entrance at the 2800 rd.
I'm wondering, what prompted this action?

I've been a frequent user of the walk in shooting pits here for well over 10 years. I have actually taken it upon myself to be an unofficial caretaker of these two pits since I shoot there often.

I am also a member of trashnoland.org which schedules cleans up of shooting areas on public, private and state lands in Washington and Oregon.

The first time I entered this shooting area I was appalled at all the trash and garbage that some left there, I thought how can people do this and sleep at night?

That very next weekend I enlisted the help of friends from an online gun community and family members to clean it up. It was a great success, we hauled out over 2 truckloads of trash.
But it didn't stay clean before people came in and trashed it again.

For 3 years I even set out a trash barrel for people to help keep the area clean. It helped for a while but being on SS, I could not afford pay the extra expenses for dump runs so I stopped. It went back to being trashed.

During the years I've continuously picked up trash when is saw it but have come to realize that a possible reason people trash these areas is that there is absolutely no enforcement. No signs other than the ones that I posted to try and make people be responsible so this are would stay open.
Signs with rules for usage would detour many undesirable people.

I would frequently interact with shooters while visiting the site and most were nice people and thankful that someone was dedicated enough to keeping the area clean and open, some were not.

Please let me know how I, and my coordination with trashnoland.org could help to possibly reopen shooting areas.

Regards, Caveman Jim"

Every word of that is true and many of us reading this can testify to its validity. Well written, Jim! I really hope the right person gets to read this!

It's important that we, as shooters, communicate with land owners and forest management agencies. I'm sure they would be surprised at the number of us who care for the land.

Here is the reply from GD…

"Hi Caveman Jim, thanks for reaching out with your question. The Kennedy Creek area is under a recreation lease, therefor there are certain activities we restrict, target shooting is one of them. The public may still walk in to recreate – hike, or horseback ride, but no other activity is allowed due to the exclusivity of the lease agreement. That's why you see the new sign there at the 2800.

Many of our timberlands are open for target shooting unless otherwise posted. If you're a permit holder, you may access approximately 120,000 acres for recreation, and you may target shoot in areas that are safe to do so."

This is their reply to my question of who leased this area…

"Unfortunately I cannot. Since we are a private company, we don't release that information. I can only say that it is under lease, therefor we restrict certain activities per the lease agreement."

Well good for you on following through with getting an answer. Nice work Jim.

That lease could be a long one, so I don't think there's any hope of getting your spot back.

At least it sounds like the closure is not specifically due to shooting there.

Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks Bill.
I'm surprised that the responder to my email did not even mention anything about my service to enhance their land…

I've talked to many people at that place and not all were shooters. A lot use it in the fairer weather for walking and biking since it's not as elevated as the Capital Forest.

Last year I spoke with one nice lady in particular, she said that she doesn't mind the noise from shooting much but many of her neighbors around the Summit Lake area had formed an association a few years ago and wanted it stopped. I'd be willing to bet a months SS that is what happened…

Oh well, tweakers beware, the Caveman will invade the hills. :s0006:
