News Release from Oregon State Police
Posted on FlashAlert: November 23rd, 2013 1:24 PM

The Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division and Deschutes County District Attorney's Office, with the assistance of Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and Bend Police Department, are investigating a Friday night fatal officer-involved shooting by a Bend police officer.

On November 22, 2013, at approximately 10:22 p.m., Bend police officers responded to a reported possible burglary-in-progress at 2878 NE Jackdaw Drive in Bend. The address was the location where earlier in the day Bend Police Department served a search warrant and seized illegally possessed firearms, heroin and methamphetamine.

When the officers arrived, one officer encountered a man exiting the back of the residence. The man was shot during the encounter with the police officer.

Medical aid was provided at the scene by police officers and responding personnel from Bend Fire and Rescue. The 31-year old man, who was not a resident where the incident occurred, was transported to St. Charles Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time. An autopsy is pending.

Per Bend Police Department standard policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer's name is also withheld at this time.

No other information is being released at this time. When approved for release, additional information will be provided through the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office at 541-388-6520.

So, just guessing here, but the deceased tried breaking into a house of a (probable) drug dealer, maybe hoping that the cops missed something, maybe knowing they had disarmed the dealer (and probably taken the house residents into custody thus leaving the home empty and ripe for pickings) then got into it with the cops and got shot. That's some good thinkin on the criminal's part... one less D-bag to victimize innocents.

Wait...The guy was running out of the residence and was shot during an encounter? Did they mean to say a struggle, fight, altercation with police? Or, did the officer just freak out in the dark and pop the guy. I feel for the officer if that is what happened, and I hope the burglar was armed!! Justifiable use of lethal force applies to the police, just like you and me!
