Gun Control: A Reality Check

Kyle Bowers
On the issue of gun control, it’s imperative to know why we have the second amendment, the amendment granting the right to bear arms. There is in fact a simple reason for the founders of this country decided to incorporate a right to own a weapon. The second amendment is a safeguard of sorts, what it guarantees is more than a just a weapon, but the idea that one person can defend themselves. They may not necessarily be defending themselves against another person, but also the government itself. What could the people possibly do if we find ourselves in a fascist nation where weapons are illegal? Over the course of the 20th century, massacres have occurred in Turkey, the Soviet Union, Germany, China, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Uganda, resulting in over 56 million deaths. What do all these cases have in common? All these countries enforced gun control laws prior to oppressing their citizens. The argument may be raised that we can find a medium in requiring citizens to register their weapons. However one fact stands, all the countries mentioned, as well as every other country to outlaw guns, began by requiring people to register their weapons.

So where does that leave the U.S.? While we are still protected by the second amendment, we are still required to register weapons, and gun trade is monitored. What would happen if guns were to be outlawed entirely? How would we, as citizens, be able to defend ourselves if our government were to turn oppressive? People believe that we can depend on police protection, but there are simply not enough cops to prevent every violent crime, whether guns are involved or not. And in a totalitarian society the police are simply enforcing the rules that we should be fighting against. Whether a crime is committed with a gun or some ones bare hands doesn’t matter so long as the crime occurs. Gun control is not a solution for violent crimes; in fact it is the states and countries that have the strictest gun control policies where there are often the most violent crimes, including Washington D.C., where firearms are illegal yet there is still one of the highest firearm death rates in the country; or in China, which has one of the strictest gun control policies in the world, where 17 school children were stabbed to death by a man wielding a knife last April. It would be nice to think that we could be safe without the need for weapons, but this is not a perfect world and gun control is a solution where the risks far outweigh the benefits.
