Another accidental discharge at the Monroe WAC show this morning......1/12/13

Yes, another one today......
I was walking in and about halfway into the building a shot went off 20 yards to my left.
It was an older table holder setting up his table and a semi-auto handgun he was handling discharged.

Apparently it was pointed at the cement floor and no one was injured. There was a divet in the concrete.

Needless to say this is NOT good news for WAC!!

The security guys were on him in minutes and he was escorted from the show.

The sheriff showed up about 1/2 hour later and was writing up a report.

Yes, it will be in the news I have no doubt.

The show was at capacity and the line was 200 yards long to get in.

Not surprised (but saddened).
Probably an anti slipped in and loaded a few guns as they went around hoping for exactly what happened to happen.

As dumb as people may think this guy was, at least he was following some sort of protocall and had the weapon pointed down into the earth.

When a member enters the show with a weapon the guys at the door zip tie the actions and make sure the guns are clear.
Not sure why the staff does not do the same for the table holders......it would certainly be a start!
Yes, negligent is a better term for this incident for sure!

I have a buddy with a table at that show today. Can't wait to get his take on it.
Fortunate nobody was hurt.
People need to understand that these screw ups make it tougher on all of us gun owners.

No excuse for this. At some point, WAC is going to lose venues as a result of incidents like this.

Saturday morning, January 12th, a table renter at the Washington Arms Collectors Monroe Show first violated the Rules of the Road by having a loaded firearm at a WAC event and then negligently discharged the firearm into the floor of the hall. No person was injured due to this persons negligence. The individual was escorted from the event, where he met with responding deputies from the Snohomish County Sheriff. The Board of Directors will meet on January 26th in the WAC Office in Renton at 10:00 a.m. to deal with this and other matters. The show in Puyallup will proceed as planned, as will the Sunday show this weekend. We anticipate discussions with the Evergreen State Fairgrounds management team this coming week regarding this unfortunate event.

Last time I helped a friend at that show I had at least two security people check the guns on the table and rifle rack at different times. One tube fed .22 had the feed tube in place. He tapped on it to remind me to remove it, which I did.
So they DO check.

First mistake, every gun is loaded. second mistake, finger on the trigger. At least the third rule was followed barrel pointed in safe direction. I bet he was luckly on the third rule. Glad nobody was hurt.

Individual table holder was at his table and removed his untied holstered carry gun (1911) from a tub/box he brought in. He removed it from the holster then cycled the slide and pulled the trigger in one motion. Fired into concrete at his feet. The hammer looked down (from my angle) as he removed the gun from his holster (I could not see the magwell from my angle) and I did not see a live round eject to the floor when he cycled the slide (though he'd turn to face away from me when he cycled the slide). So, if this (hammer down and no live round ejected) is indeed the case (and he does not carry chamber empty), I suspect he'd cleared the gun earlier, but then put the loaded mag back in the gun. Many NDs I hear about with a semi-autos are the result of this very thing (i.e. failing to first remove the mag when cycling and then cycling and pulling the trigger as one motion while not pausing to visually/physically check the chamber). He was talking me when it happened about the new grips he'd gotten for his carry 1911 and had gotten the gun out to show me them. Security arrived in seconds. He broke clearly established WAC rules written to prevent this very thing. He's a nice guy otherwise. Bad deal all around.

This was my first gun show and I had just entered the building and was in line to join WAC. Heard what certainly sounded like a gunshot. There was very little reaction from the crowd around me... a few muttered "that's not good" and even chuckled, but nobody reacted strongly or left the building. I really wasn't sure what to think. If I hadn't found this thread I might never have found out what happened...
