….unfortunate situation, glad everyone's opinion doesn't matter! This board lacks compassion and empathy when it should shine thru in a tragedy like this that involves weapons. But alas the dominant theme is political motivation……crazy!

It's hard to have compassion when our hands are tied in doing anything productive to solve the problem. Every time there's a shooting it quickly becomes apparent that the shooter was severely mentally ill. Time after time, people, family members, classmates, local police, the FBI, just about everybody knew this person was a danger to themselves and others, and yet nothing was done.

The reason nothing gets done is we have a crowd constantly waiting in the wings with their anti-gun agenda for that first drop of warm blood to hit the ground so that they can start screaming about guns. We can't discuss the real issue or try to solve it because we are drowned out by the political opportunists trying to ban guns. Oh, they have their reasons. They see guns as a male objects, things which to them are to be hated and feared, and destroyed if possible because they never got along with daddy for one reason or another. Maybe they hate him because he deserted them when their crazy mom drove him out. Maybe they hate him because he abused them. Maybe they hate him because they never knew him. Whatever the reason, they equate guns with people they fear and hate, and they take over every situation with their canned, rehashed, repeated harangues about making the powerful powerless. That will solve everything. If everyone his powerless nobody can hurt anybody, right?

It can't be anything else, right? It can't be that people who are a danger to themselves and others are allowed to walk the streets unsupervised all over America. "There's a killer on the road...His brain is squirming' like a toad"...The Doors had it right. In every city there are dozens of 20 year old failures at life. No college, no job, no woman, no prospects, no future...and they're angry about that. They're so angry they want to take themselves out and take as many innocents with them as they can. That's the only way they know how to make a statement, to be noticed, to matter. They will have their 2 days of fame and maybe someone will remember their name in 20 years. They will have gone out with a bang, literally. Made the dramatic exit. Stuck it to the MAN (or woman who ignored their attempts at romance).

We need to find a way to treat people without hope, but with lots of resentment and paranoia. There was a time in the 1960s when these people were locked up for involuntary treatment. They got a clean, safe place to stay, 3 hot meals a day, drug therapy, group therapy, one-on-one therapy, and every once in a while they were returned to society as productive citizens. Now we give them $300 a month general assistance, and a flophouse hotel room next door to the liquor store. We issue them a prescription for pills, which they promptly sell on the street. We make appointments for "outpatient therapy" which they never keep, and we never follow up.

But try to discuss any of this in a public forum and you're drowned out by the anti-gun crowd, who just want to take away all the guns. Everyone would be SO much happier, or so they say.
