A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears not a traitor: he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.
    THE TRAITOR IS THE PLAGUE.

    attributed to: Marcus Tullius Cicero

A truer quote I have never heard !
He had a good mind and they executed him for it.
“there is nothing proper about what you are doing, soldier, but do try to kill me properly"

"His legacy is long lasting and had its greatest effect in the Roman era and later during the Renaissance. St. Augustine credits Marcus Tullius Cicero’s thought and writing with his pursuit of a greater purpose in life. His political thought and activism is said to have inspired the figures of both the American Revolution and the French revolution. "

    ref: treason from within

His description sure fits though. along with most in the Senate and a few in the Congress and
some here as well. It's even down to local, city, county and state level now.

There are many who served in the "Legions" that have not turned their backs on the oath "once taken". They'll not totally possess this country easily (if ever) without fear for their lives at some point.

Cicero was a snake too, he was no selfless public servant. before he was killed he was one of the top 5 richest men in Italy and was not afraid to show it to everyone. much of his political influence was used to increase his power and wealth. quoting his written attacks on Julius Caeser and Mark Antony is really no different from the ridiculous banter we get from the news every day.

Regardless of political party, all this banter and talk that keep us fighting,
Everyone deep down really knows, despite which way the wind blows,
Incumbents decades in the making, sold out to filthy lucre,
Dodgy games they play, our freedoms are what they're taking.

Most the Roman politicians were ruthless, that was their world. It was dog eat dog. There were, like the Greeks some brilliant minds, orators and military men. Do remember, they went from what WAS basically an operating republic to a succession of Caesars who acted as Kings, Emperors, dictators. Some not so bad but many not so good. Its been a good while since I studied Roman history in college but we should look at their wrong turn in history was when one man elevated himself to "God" and no longer cared what the Senate or the other houses of government wanted.

Senatus Populusque Rom**** (the Senate and the people of Rome) . SPQR. abbreviation for. (Historical Terms) Senatus Populusque Rom****.
Don't See a C in there for Caesar, is there.

Oh for pity's sake you can't post roman with an us added. Really, how infantile is this censor text editor. So let's try it phonetically. ROHMAHNUS.

And no I didn't knife Julius Caesar, it is my nickname when I was in the service.
