Greetings. I have been in the Northwest since '96 when I got out of the Navy. I was a SAR volunteer in Skamania County for 10 years and still enjoy the natural beauty and pace of life out here. I grew up riding dirt bikes and shooting 22's on long meandering walks in the mountains (the Sierras at the time). Now I am so thankful for having these beautiful, wet mountains right out back.

I am looking forward to the community and conversations around here. I have the handle Dunner over at Bladeforums where I was active in the Busse Knives and Axe sub-forums.

Cheers!
Dunner

Welcome from a fairly recent member.

You truly live in a beautiful place. I've spent maybe a week total poking around your county, there is so much to do there. I'm about 4 hours away so it's not too easy of a visit, but worth it. I want to get back and see more.

I got to do Ape Caves, both right before the 1980 eruption and a few years after. I got to see the forest before and then again about 2 years after as the cave is dead center in the blow out zone. Going back now, the forest is growing back. That part is so cool to see. There are 20 foot tall trees in what was bare ash in the early 1980's. I never saw the "before" on Spirit Lake, but saw it a few months later. Friends of my parents owned a cabin along the river, and got to go in and salvage whatever they could under National Guard escort. The cabin had about 3 feet of mud and ash in it, and when we got there it was nearly like concrete.

Welcome Aboard. Glad you found the forum.

This is the best place to hang out on the internet.

Check out the organized clean ups. It's the best way to meet the community and learn where and how to use public lands responsibly.

We are doing non ODF supported cleanups at public forests - check the North Fork Wolf Creek Road thread in resources.

If you really want to get involved in community action check out Trash No Land.
