Move over "drop wallet" and say hello to the Decoy Phone.

With new smart phones costing $1000 these days it seem prudent to carry a Fake or Decoy phone. I already have a fake "drop wallet" with bogus VISA cards and a novelty McLovin Drivers Licence along with a $20 wrapped around a bunch of One's for buying small stuff. Perhaps it is time to add a cheap $50 WalMart smart phone incase someone ever gets the drop on me.

Mexicans buy fake cellphones to hand over in muggings

So I saw this guy he was a comic or something he was going to the Olympics in Brazil.
Someone told him about the crime.
So he did research.
And got a fake wallet.
Filled it with dick pictures from porn magazine .
And fake money.
Carried it around.
And he said on his last night there he walked out of a bar .
And two guys robbed him .
He gave them the fake wallet and they left.
He said he went back in the bar a told his friends what happened and just Laugh and had another drink .

Actually, carrying a spare/Backup cellphone is a good idea but not for the reasons stated in the O.P.
Having a spare phone fully charged and ready to go, but powered down and it's chip removed will give you an emergency phone should something happen that sees you separated from your normal phone.
Car crash and your stuff isn't safe to recover, plane crash, lost in the woods, separated from your group,..................

And yes, a throw away could also bee a useful option!
Better operating "Field Craft" is to do ONE thing, Keep wallets and Cell phones in a front pocket, making it damn near impossible to pick pocket you with out you knowing and able to stop it!
Mugged, tell them you ain't got chit, and show your back pockets! Don't make it easy for baddies!
Don't follow the normal conveniences that folks have been doing for the last hundred+ years!

Got an old phone on hand? just use one of those only factory reset it and add some bogus numbers to it like local restaurants or even the local authorities just with different names. I use both a burner wallet thats loaded with bogus info and I use an old phone thats disabled but still carries a charge.

How did we all survive in times gone by without carrying a phone with us?

A gun and a knife 'necessary', yes, phone, no...

A cheap, pay as go is good enough for me...generally leave it at home unless 'she who must be obeyed' forces it on me...it's roughly 12/15 years old (still works when I think to turn it on) and the only thing I can do with it is make and receive calls on it - plenty good enough.

Now, get off my lawn, consarn it!

You really don't have to carry a spare phone.
If something happens there will be plenty of people around with a phone.
EXCEPT they won't be calling 911 for help .
They will be filming you in trouble to post it in Facebook or Instagram.
Maybe someone will actually use there phone to call for help.

Your on your own out there.
Be prepared to protect yourself

True story... I was going over some bullying issues with my daughters and this is what transpired.

Me: OK, pretend that someone comes up to you in school and demands that you give them your phone.
Daughter: But dad, we have Blackberry's...

What could I do but laugh? We are a Blackberry family. Apparently built in anti-theft factor is one of the perks. Who knew? :p

The last "mobile phone" I had was a PRC 77....:D
No cell phones for me...thank you very much...I bet that if I ever was robbed , the robbers wouldn't believe that I did not have , nor ever had a cell phone...
Andy

I have to believe most encounters where the phone is taken, involve the bad actor seeing it - snatch or threaten. I get that they will stop someone to demand cash to fund their nightly activities.
Much like the thieves taking laptops off customers at coffee shops.

I spent many a frozen nights on the old Communist borders with a PRC 77 strapped to my back. Good times.
