Funny post , I like the humor in the OP and in many of the replies.

If the caliber you choose works for you then you have made good choice.
All calibers have pluses and minuses.
Find a gun , caliber and cartridge combo you can carry and hit with.
Use the most reliable cartridge the works out of your gun.
Practice.
Practice carrying , so you don't print or expose yourself , so to speak!:D
Practice safely drawing and re-holstering.
Shooting practice in all weather , lighting , when sick or healthy , all types of clothes etc ...

And maybe most important , be sure you are willing to use your gun , if needed.
All the skill and "caliber" is useless if you do not have the will to use it.

Just my 2 cents on the time honored question of : "What handgun or caliber should I get for self defense?"

A 500 Magnum is only good for killing watermelons or they would have it on the chart.

If I'm ever attacked by a gang of watermelons...sure.
Just pick a caliber & gun and practice with it lots.
Who is more deadly: a SOC high speed operator with a .22lr or some guy that drags his .44mag to the range a few times a year?

That's a thoughtful and well-stated list Andy.

To your point regarding reliability, I've seen a few friends over the years whose semi-autos plowed through cheap practice ball ammo like Rosie O'Donnel with a tub of ribs at Golden Corral. But they jammed repeatedly on the far more expensive hollow points held in reserve for EDC. It's a worthwhile investment to know for sure should the SHTF.

Thanks teflon!
My series 70 Colt was liked that until dad had it "polished and throated" as they used to call it , before it became mine.
Now it feeds ball and hollow points , even all lead bullets just fine.
