That's a good history lessen that all gun owners should know. Good stuff, all factual and without the shock that Coulter sometimes uses to get press.

This will give you an idea of how gun control laws worked. Following the firebombing of his house in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King, who was, among other things, a Christian minister, applied for a gun permit, but the Alabama authorities found him unsuitable. A decade later, he won a Nobel Peace Prize.

How's that "may issue" gun permit policy working for you?

The NRA opposed these discretionary gun permit laws and proceeded to grant NRA charters to blacks who sought to defend themselves from Klan violence -- including the great civil rights hero Robert F. Williams.

A World War II Marine veteran, Williams returned home to Monroe, N.C., to find the Klan riding high -- beating, lynching and murdering blacks at will. No one would join the NAACP for fear of Klan reprisals. Williams became president of the local chapter and increased membership from six to more than 200.

But it was not until he got a charter from the NRA in 1957 and founded the Black Armed Guard that the Klan got their comeuppance in Monroe.

Williams' repeated thwarting of violent Klan attacks is described in his stirring book, "Negroes With Guns." In one crucial battle, the Klan sieged the home of a black physician and his wife, but Williams and his Black Armed Guard stood sentry and repelled the larger, cowardly force. And that was the end of it.

As the Klan found out, it's not so much fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

The NRA's proud history of fighting the Klan has been airbrushed out of the record by those who were complicit with the KKK, Jim Crow and racial terror, to wit: the Democrats.

In the preface to "Negroes With Guns," Williams writes: "I have asserted the right of Negroes to meet the violence of the Ku Klux Klan by armed self-defense -- and have acted on it. It has always been an accepted right of Americans, as the history of our Western states proves, that where the law is unable, or unwilling, to enforce order, the citizens can, and must act in self-defense against lawless violence."

Based on this article it was both dem and rep that tried to get gun control in Calif during the 60s to control race riots But then it is California.

In my original post I stated that they were democrats, but that those democrats happened to be conservative. Could I get a translation on "Wow you progy trash knee jerked on that one." I want to know how offended to be.

Read the first sentence. Look at that, I'm a journalist. I had a preconcieved notion that the KKK was a far right organization and I found the evidence to back it up.

Sorry about the shoddy research, wikipedia was the first thing that came up and I'm at work so I better get back to it; I will be interested to see the sources you come up with that say the KKK sprung out of the far left though.

Apparently my mistake is in not giving an entire dissertation on PoliSci 101 !

Please do not take a simple posting on a specific, as a limitation of a more broad topic.

Perhaps there is a graph on the relative positions of Collectivism, Communism of the USSR, Socialism of the NaZi Party, Faschism of Italy in 1938 vs. today, the Fabians, the relationship of Progressives and Eugenics, The difference between Czarist Russia and the expansion and reduction of the British Empire under Queen Victoria, and the relative controls on people and /or territory as far back as Alexander, along with the merits of governments gaining wealth from taxation vs natural resources vs slaughtering their own in order to spend less.

In every case the issue is varying amounts of power and control.

The definition(s) of "Left" and "Right" politics have changed over the years, every bit as much as "conservative" and "Liberal."

It's no secret that Republicans were the advocates for black equality for over a century until the dems instituted the civil rights act, and welfare in the 60s.
Funny how those two came about at the same time eh?
The truth is, that Lincoln was a Repub, as was Martin Luther King Jr. His daughter Alveda, is to this day. Frederick Douglass, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Robinson, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver were all Republicans.

Of course you lefties don't want to hear that, so maybe you shouldn't read this article about Dr. Eric Foner's book, by that famous Republican Black advocate, Francis Rice:

On page 146 of his book, Professor Foner wrote: "Founded in 1866 as a Tennessee social club, the Ku Klux Klan spread into nearly every Southern state, launching a &#8216;reign of terror&#8216; against Republican leaders black and white." Page 184 of his book contains the definitive statements: "In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic party, the planter class, and all those who desired the restoration of white supremacy. It aimed to destroy the Republican party's infrastructure, undermine the Reconstruction state, reestablish control of the black labor force, and restore racial subordination in every aspect of Southern life."

Of course there is more if any of you true-blue lefties would like to read up on more recent atrocities committed by the democrats against blacks.

The fact is the first slaves in this country were not black and the first blacks in this country were not slaves. The first slaves were the natives enslaved by the Spaniards, and the first blacks in North America were free black members of Spanish crews. It wasn't until the natives were decimated by disease and overwork that blacks were imported from West Africa. Once the Blacks were improted they became the main source of labor that the plantation system depended upon. Jefferson and Washington both owned over 200 slaves each. Jefferson had a long running afair with one of his house sevants Sally Hemmings, this union produced seven children. Jefferson kept the females as house servants. Diplomats dining at Monticello commented that the women (slaves) serving them looked just like ole Tommy boy. In fact some of them later passed as white in Society.
