After a 6 month wait my 627-0 arrived from the mothership, where she had a new hammer stud installed and a complete overhaul - just like new. Although not real rare, you don't see many for sale these days. They made about 5000 -0s, 3500 for The USA/Canada and about 1500 for Europe.

I found it at a gun show last August. A little ole widow was selling her late husband's collection. At first glance I thought it was a 629 Classic, but I noticed the holes were too small and it had factory combat grips. A closer look revealed the finely checkered top strap - I immediately recognized it as a 627-0.

As I was picking it up, the widow told me If I wanted it, she let it go for $600 instead of $895. I pointed out that the hammer just flopped around and I didn't know how much it would cost to fix it. I walked away with the gun for $200. 6 months and $380 later, here she is.

I had a similar 627-0, 5.5 inch unfluted cylinder. The right side of the barrel was
marked "Model of 1989". This is a 357 on the big 'N' frame 44. A pleasure to
shoot with full power 357 loads. Nice score enjoy your new Smith.

Yep, it's the same gun. FWIW, the 627-0 is the only post-war Smith to have a 5.5 inch barrel; it's also the only stainless, production Smith to have a checkered top strap and -0 designation.
