Hello there. I'm in the middle of a Grendel build and I've never had the caliber before. So with our upcoming mag ban im doing some last min shopping.

Which mags have you had little or no issues? I'm just trying to see which ones are recommended so I know which to get and which to stay away from.

Thanks to all who responds!

I like my ASCs.

10 round or less Grendel magazines almost always work, and higher capacities are more likely to go wrong, whomever made them. I mostly own 10s (mixed) and 17s (Elander). They all seem fine. I sold off some "26 round" magazines for super cheap, letting the buyer know they kinda sucked.

I have 10rd ASC, 10 and 20rd CPD Duramags for my Grendel. I also made a couple of pouches for them; 1 4x10rd retro style belt/MOLLE panel, and 1 3x20 retro belt/MOLLE box pouch 20210821_114304.jpg 20210821_114325.jpg 20210821_114400.jpg 20210821_114316.jpg 20200918_131104.jpg 20200918_131115.jpg 20200918_131109.jpg 20200918_123743.jpg 20200918_131124.jpg 20201012_141354.jpg
Shown 1 20rd CPD, 4x 10rd CPD, with 1 Esstac Shorty 4" tall KYWI kydex wedge insert, that I have 6 of, and haven't made pouches for, to be used with the 20rd mags.

Those are pretty cool!

C-products 6.5 grendel and 7.62x39 mags will both feed and cycle 6.5 grendel flawlessly for 28/30rd mags. Avoid straight mags for anything over 10rds. a proper grendel mag needs the same mag curve as a 7.62x39 to stack and feed properly. Never had an issue with my mags and have used the 7.62x39 and 6.5 mags interchangeably with both calibers in my rifles.

That said: I do typically shoot out of a 10rd mag with the grendel due to ammo cost. At least when ammo was 'cheaper' when I last bought ammo for it, it was still ~$1.00/rd for the ammo I feed it. (hornady black 123gr ELD Match)

Thank you! I didnt even think of trying x39 mags!

Some visual aids ;) Blue follower is the 26rd C-Products 6.5 Grendel Duramag. Black follower is the 26rd C-products 7.62x39 Duramag.

See any difference other than color of the follower? I certainly don't. The rifles don't care which mag you use either as long as you have the right caliber ammo for the rifle.

I have 224 Valk, 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC magazines from multiple vendors.
Precision Reflex (PRI), which are 6.8 SPC magazines, work the best in all three of these calibers. Not a single other magazine maker comes close.
In all the other brands, I load one or two rounds less than the capacity, and thus rarely have a feed problem.
With C-Products (IIRC), I had to file a notch into the mag lip for clean feeding (i.e. cutoff wheel in my dremel, cut the notch and then file the burr).
In reality, any of them will do as long as you understand their shortcomings and adjust accordingly.
The only ones I've *never* had any problem with were the PRI magazines.
Edit to add: I have also found, I can use these interchangeably between calibers. I use the PRI for Grendel, and use my Grendel mags for SPC.

Yes, PRI mags are top shelf.
One reason is that they solved the riddle of being able to do a clean, continuous "butt weld".
A butt welded mag allows for a longer COAL and a nicer, stronger mag as a side benefit.
All of the others rely on a spot welded lap joint.

Of all the metal AR mags, and I like Okay SureFeed mags, PRI is top of the heap.
They are not cheap, you have to pay to play.

I think those PRI mags @DirectDrive mentioned are 10 round mags aren't they? Or do they make others? I saw JP rifles had those on sale recently maybe still for something like BOGO free..
I have some legit Barrett 6.8 mags to try out they seem very high quality and weren't cheap, but good mags are worth every penny. As well as elander and asc.

You also mentioned the OEM Bill Alexander mags, those are just Elander mags as well. (Which I'm betting you know)
yeah I want to try those PRI's they are on the list. Also the Larue mags seem really decent but haven't had a chance to actually use those either yet.

Is a little hard to tell from a pic but almost looks like the dummy round hump has a bigger longer edge angle to the blue follower. Maybe its just the way the angle changes to the camera lenses?? Idk.
