This quote from someone who's obviously "been there" is exactly why I say our mental health care system is broken...

We have closed our mental hospitals and allowed the insurance industry to dictate mental health treatment. We throw anti-psychotic medications at people without assessing their effectiveness or even the side effects these meds may be causing. We treat the mentally ill worse than we treat the criminals. We neglect them, abuse them, and fail to protect them in any way. We also fail to properly assess them to determine if they need supervision or custodial care. A typical mental health evaluation in a county emergency mental health facility takes about five or ten minutes, hardly a good basis for an accurate assessment and treatment program.

If your child developed schizophrenia and chose to roam the streets and dig through garbage cans for food, what would you do. If they became obsessed with the belief that aliens were monitoring their thoughts, or living in their bodies, what would you do? If they began self-medicating with alcohol and dangerous drugs, what would you do?

If hospitalization cost over $100,000 per year, how would you pay for it? Remember, this disease is a lifetime odyssey. It rarely goes away. The medications cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars a month to a few thousand dollars a month and require at least one visit to a psychiatrist ($160 per 50 minute hour) every month. Most of the time, the medication is of limited help, partly because the doctor rarely takes the time to observe the patient for a significant period of time and therefore cannot properly assess how well the drugs may be working.

Lots of you have snarky, cruel, and uncaring comments. But mental illness can happen to anyone. It could happen to your child, your bright, creative and happy child could become a sullen, troubled, frightened psychotic and you wouldn't be able to do one damn thing to change it, fix it, or make it go away. What would you do?

Well, the argument, at least back in the 70's was that people who didn't need to be treated as inpatients were hospitalized and given lobotomies and all....(remember "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?)

So, in an attempt to appease everyone, they let a LOT of people out of hospital that shouldn't have been and now don't hospitalize people that should be. This occurred BEFORE all this Obamacare and sequestering and all that stuff.

As a direct result, we have homeless people who are mentally ill wandering the streets (not every homeless person is mentally ill)....

It's a feel good society we live in, where we want to please everyone, hurt no one's feelings, everything is puppies and rainbows, unicorns exist and everyone is special in their own way....
