My experiment/observation.........

I tried placing a re-loaded 380 ACP cartridge into a barrel made for a 9mm cartridge. The 380 ACP cartridge will go into the chamber but, too deeply. That means that the firing pin will probably not hit the primer or will do so very lightly, probably causing misfires. And, although it might/could/maybe be held/supported by the extractor in the extractor groove when the firing pin strikes. I bet, I wouldn't be happy.

Of course, a 9mm cartridge will chamber just right into a 9mm barrel. Not to mention, that 9mm ammo is usually cheaper and more effective on your "target."

I also would say, "Use the correct cartridge for your firearms."
