I'm going to start reloading .223 for my Oly-arms carbine.
I have the books and getting the necessary equipment as we speak, now I'm just missing a starting point.
Normally I would just pick a recipe thats the right weight and work it up, but can anyone suggest a good "starting" recipe for a new rifle reloader?

Thanks

are you hand measuring your charges or do you intend to use a powder throwing device? This can be an issue in selecting a powder that really doesnt exist in the pistol realm.

This was my load last week 24.3gr H335 powder, Hornady 55grn bullet, Federal #205 primer clock in @ 3105 fps. Another set was 26.9grn H380 powder, same bullet and primer, same case Win clocked in at @2989-3003 fps tight groups at 100 yards and 150 yrds. Frizzz brought the chronometer last week

This is some data I come up with a BM 16" 1/9 twist using UMC brass and CCI 400 primers.

Mr. Frizzz EVIL black gun people. Your cooking recipe is for the IRAQ WAR dude. :s0155: Those data alone will last a man a years worth of testing and tuning. Have fun people. Good number!

Reading is great but hands on actual loading and testing to find specific loads that works well with your rifle length of barrel and shooting habits is the best answer. Load ten of each variation, bench rest shooting, log your results in detail repeat the best load and do the math. This is where the fun is at crunching numbers and arriving at the correct one load for that specific rifle. Methodical no magic here!

Beware of this character "Dan POTTRATZ" <[email protected]" selling brass "Once Fired" at local gun shows. He is reside in Woodburn and have many email id above is one from craigs list. Those of us who needs honesty and correct brass history will not benefit from purchasing false and misleading products. For such a long drive to save a little one could loose a finger or an eye for such dishonest business transaction.

You place too much importance on "once fired" you inspect each case for defects and trim accordingly regardless of how many times its been fired. Its also probably ill advised to get anywhere near max loads on anything really. As long as you arent getting splits or case head seperation and keep the loads fairly conservative they are fine.

This is my exact report! I am getting split case in the neck area after one load. Bought 500 rnds on your honor of course, seller stated that all is well as he sells them like hot cakes at gun shows. My report is about ethics and honest business I paid for 500 count I expect to have the same amount in working order first run. Side note certain percentage were questionable for use.

Seller was mean and insulting after I brought this to his attention. He could easily replace the bad ones and keep good faith for future business relation. Make it a positive experience! I think he profile me for an idiot and dealt a one time sell attitude towards me. He made a good sell if you think I should have counted all brass in front of MC D parking lot at time of purchase on a hot summer day I might as well refuse the purchase. This was a learning experience for me, trust is for the dogs:s0131:!!!
