Up from 600 last year and 300 the year before that on this date.

That number must come from just the officially investigated shootings where they collect casings and such cuz 1000 shootings/289 days = average of 3.4 shootings per day.

Looking at the police blotter I usually see 7-15 shootings reported per day (I mean unique addresses reported, no repeats).

Plus some obvious shootings that were shown on neighbors and Nextdoor app were only called "disturbance-priority" and not listed as shootings on the police blotter.

This is just weak sauce...

Chicago managed 2K by July.

How is PDX to compete for business with such a lousy track record?

They doubled up on us in a smaller timeframe.

Chicago (2,670,406) has over four times the population of Portland (662,549), so Chicago would need slightly over 4,000 to keep up with Portland's new trendsetting pace.

By this time next year, I'm sure that Portland's progressive leadership will find a way to top Chicago in raw numbers.

It really is sad what has become of the Rose City. Alas, I don't see a course correction any time soon. :(
Sadly I think they will continue to double down on the policies that has lead to this and I don't see any real change in leadership philosophy regardless of elections. Portland voters (not all, but an unfortunate majority) are literally shooting themselves by making bad decisions.

There is always one constant with stuff like this. Those in power make damn sure it does not effect them. So of course nothing will change. The people feeling the pain vote the people back in who made the mess but make sure the mess is not around their house. So those in charge have zero incentive to change anything.

Portland voters who elected these great leaders, when given a chance to correct their mistakes, do not do so. Recall failed. Just walk around the city and see what is on the streets; birds of a feather flock together. That includes the remaining business community. Our civic leaders are not gutless; their destructive ideas are methodological because their political goals are different than what most of us would like?

It's actually not a decision in most cases. There are no good poeple running for offices. For example for mayor the choice was (1) weakling-let's-just-talk-about-everything-pander-to-Hardesty-but-do-nothing wheeler, or (2) self proclaimed antifa member and borderline psychotic ultra socialist lady (can't remember her name, inona or something like that). It is not a matter of voting decisions, as if there was a decent choice available.

In addition we have a screwball commission government (I think it's the only big city in US that still has it). What we have right now is wheeler, the DA Schmidt who won't prosecute anyone for most offenses unless they are perceived as right wing, and Hardesty. That unholy trinity is simply a recipe for disaster by themselves not even taking into account any of the other commissioners.

Because they will not wast time and money. The state said they liked Kate. When voters act like that why would someone "good" bother to try? The people who think Kate is great are not going to vote for someone better especially in Potland. If the voters ever start to show they really have had enough? Then you will see better choices step up to take a swing at it.

A large part of what I heard about the recall is people are afraid we will get someone worse. In particular ppl were worried about the ultra left wing anarchist lady. If she became mayor the damage would be 10 fold and I'm not kidding about that. She is way, way, out there on the radical side.

Even worse, comparing Portland to slightly larger Detroit (664,139) the best information I have is an estimation of about 300 shootings, making it over three times more likely for you to get shot in Portland than Detroit. Think about that.

Portland is off limits for me and my wallet, with two exceptions, passing through or pick-up's/drop off's at the airport.

I refuse to do any business there, it's a city and county that deny basic civil rights of self protection and self defense. All the while, defunding the police and letting criminals walk free…

Let the dregs have Portland, they've pretty much destroyed the downtown area anyway. And don't get me started about Old Town and the open air psychiatric ward it has become…

Just more proof that democrats are in-capable of properly managing anything longer than a term or two…

Hows that " defund the police ,dont enforce laws or folks will get their feelings hurt " liberal social experiment working for ya Portland?

Right there with you. The last two times I was in PDX was for a funeral and a connecting flight. In other words two trips that couldn't be avoided. (I've noticed, literally, 100% of my family that lived in the area are now all out. Coincidence? Very unlikely.)

Just for some context on the ultra radical mayoral candidate, she has openly stated, "I am antifa", has stated she would defund the police and hand the police over to Hardesty, and that peaceful protests might not be enough to "move the conversation forward". The next day her campaign manager issued a statement that they don't condone violence but the cat was already out of the bag. That is why everyone is scared to recall the devil that we know because the result could be absolutely catastrophic.

They'll get there. They just have to govern harder.

I've been looking around for a chart and finding one political rambling after another. These were the top ten for murders per 100,000 as of January:

  1. St. Louis, MO
  2. Baltimore, MD
  3. Detroit, MI
  4. Dayton, OH
  5. Baton Rouge, LA
  6. New Orleans, LA
  7. Kansas City, MO
  8. Memphis, TN
  9. Cleveland, OH
  10. Richmond, VA
