The Buffalo Nickel debuted from the United States Mint in 1913. It was designed by James Earle Fraser during the administration of William H. Taft, and Fraser brought his lifes experience growing up on the plains of Minnesota and the Dakotas to bear in the design. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser traveled extensively throughout the region in the late 19th century with his father, encountering the American bison and interacting with Native American tribes.

On the obverse of the 1/2 oz Buffalo Silver Coin is the right-profile portrait of a Native American. In the upper-right portion of the design fields edge is an engraving of Liberty. Fraser would not say for decades who the inspiration was for this Native American design, eventually admitting that he combined the facial and physical features of three individuals to create the image.

The reverse of all Buffalo Silver Coin include the left-profile of an American bison standing on an outcrop patch of dirt. His original bison design was based upon Black Diamond, a resident of New York City's Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. Engravings on this side also remain similar to the Buffalo Nickel, with United States of America and E Pluribus Unum above the bison. Instead of a face value below, you'll see only the weight, purity, and metal content of the round.
