"Yer not bringing any of those icky automatics are you?!"*snort*

Good luck, bro... for all the military presence and AR-specialist shops in th Puget Sound area, the ranges are for the most part Fudd-infested Hells.

Any ideas for places to go within about 1 hour of Tacoma? 4x4 is no problem. Would like to shoot rifles 1-200 yards as well as some clays/ shotguns and pistols.

Assuming you mean just the great outdoors and not a range? If that is the case it's not really there any more. People have spread out so far it's a long drive to find a place that there is not people. there is some shooting done on places along the powerline road that goes from the dam to the water but, any place it's done is always questionable as to how wise it is and how legal it is. We have not been in a while but up on the mountain there are some. Roads are only open part of the year and you are supposed to buy a pass to use them. Old quarries that were dug out when they were building the roads up there. It becomes pretty much a day trip when we go. By the time we drive up there, set up, shoot, clean up our mess and some of the others. As bad as the places were I have been surprised they have not banned shooting. People make one hell of a mess. So we would stop somewhere to eat on the way back and pretty much the day is done.
For shooing rifle the base is supposed to be quite nice and open to the public a few days a week. Have not yet been but told it is nice and not expensive. There are a few others around Piece County, I have heard mixed reviews, below are a couple of them.

You can also get airborne with Google Earth and look for abandoned rock pits or open areas up in the forest.
Grab the coordinates and go check them out.
That's how I found my shooting areas.

Greenwater was closed last time I went up and good luck above Wilkeson as the timber company created a 9.1 mile safety corridor that puts you on single track, unsafe for shooting. So I joined Paul Bunyan range as I got tired of driving 90 minutes to shoot only to be disappointed in what was available.

Have they gotten over their "thing" with Black rifles? I have not known anyone who goes there in decades. Back when I moved back here they had a real hard on for anything black rifle. Place is close to where I live now so kept meaning to find out if the current owners / managers, had lost that problem?

Paul Bunyan? I've seen a few of them shooting them, they limit you to 10 rounds in your mags for safety reasons but no issues so far.

I fail to see how neutering mags is "safety" except in the case of a disconnector-malfunction runaway...

It's not "safer" and it's dumb in my opinion but, their range, their rules. There is a fairly nice place in Gig Harbor that takes this to even more exstreams, which is why I have never gone there. Work friend did, they let him shoot his AR, only 5 rounds per mag. He could live with that but the bench was not at a height he could sit and shoot. He was kind of squatting at bench and one of the "people in charge" told him he could not do that. They were nasty enough about it he never went back. Reading reviews of the place that seems to be a common theme, that people in charge are trying to run off everyone. So I have never tried. My Wife did take a class there little while ago. Her they pretty much ignored as many in the class could not even load a gun. So they spent so much time with them she could not even get a question answered. Left with a bad taste over having paid for some time with an instructor. Again though their range, their rules. I have wanted to try some of my PCC's at a 100 yrds just for the kicks. So may get out to Paul B and try. I could live with loading 10 per mag to try it out. I just do not feel like the damn drive up to that mountain any more and the mess. I have never run into anyone while up there since we go middle of the week but, the mess left makes me wonder what kind of bozo's you might run into up there.

So overall consensus is go to a range? Getting to snowy areas is no problem, we do that for fun. Could stretch the time to 90 minutes.
We are very black gun friendly, including the pistol variety and most ranges are not fond of them. Also, paying for pistol/rifle as well as shotgun is a bummer.
