Turkey ( ( listen); Turkish: Türkiye [ˈtyɾcije]), officially the Republic of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ; pronounced [ˈtyɾcije d͡ʒumˈhuɾijeti]), is a transcontinental country in Eurasia, mainly in Anatolia in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries with Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the south. The country is encircled by seas on three sides with the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, which together form the Turkish Straits, divide Thrace and Anatolia and separate Europe and Asia. Ankara is the capital while Istanbul is the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. Approximately 70-80% of the country's citizens identify themselves as ethnic Turks. Kurds are the largest minority at about 20% of the population, and other ethnic minorities include Circassians, Albanians, Arabs, Bosniaks and Laz. Minority languages spoken today in Turkey include Kurmanji, Arabic, Zaza, Kabardian and several others.
The area of Turkey has been inhabited since the Paleolithic age by various ancient Anatolian civilisations, as well as Assyrians, Greeks, Thracians, Phrygians, Urartians and Armenians. After Alexander the Great conquered these lands, the area was Hellenized, a process which continued under the Roman Empire and its transition into the Byzantine Empire. The Seljuk Turks began migrating into the area in the 11th century, and their victory over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 symbolizes the start of Turkification in Anatolia. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol invasion in 1243, when it disintegrated into small Turkish beyliks. From the end of the 13th century the Ottomans started uniting Anatolia and created an empire that encompassed much of Southeast Europe, West Asia and North Africa. The Ottoman Empire reached its peak land mass and became a world power during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent in the early modern period. It remained powerful and influential for two more centuries, until important setbacks in the 17th and 18th century forced it to cede strategic territories in Europe, which signaled the loss of its former military strength and wealth.
After the 1913 Ottoman coup d'état, which effectively put the country under the control of the Three Pashas, the Ottoman Empire decided to join the Central Powers during World War I. During the war, the Ottoman government committed genocides against its Armenian, Assyrian and Pontic Greek subjects. Following the war, the conglomeration of territories and peoples that formerly comprised the Ottoman Empire was partitioned into several new states. The Turkish War of Independence, initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his colleagues against occupying Allies, resulted in the abolition of monarchy in 1922 and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, with Atatürk as its first president. Atatürk enacted numerous reforms, many of which incorporated various aspects of western thought, philosophy, and customs into the new form of Turkish government.
Turkey is a charter member of the UN, an early member of NATO, the IMF and the World Bank, and a founding member of the OECD, OSCE, BSEC, OIC and G-20. After becoming one of the first members of the Council of Europe in 1949, Turkey became an associate member of the EEC in 1963, joined the EU Customs Union in 1995 and started accession negotiations with the European Union in 2005. Turkey's economy and diplomatic initiatives led to its recognition as a regional power while its location has given it geopolitical and strategic importance throughout history.
Turkey's current administration headed by president Tayyip Erdoğan has reversed many of the earlier reforms, such as Freedom of the Press, a Legislative System of Checks and Balances, and a set of standards for secularism in government, as previously enacted by Atatürk.
First turkey hunt, ever.
Before flying out, pulled my bow from storage. Hadn't used it ~9 years.
Practiced all week. Arrows are a lot like reloads. Different brands shoot so differently
Headed into the game lands at 06:00.
Beautiful day, soggy as hell from the deluges we had out here this week...
Hello fellows!
Decided to try my hand at bagging a Tom this season. Signed up for the ODFW's turkey hunting clinic, this Saturday at EE Wilson.
Had a few questions for those with more wisdom than myself.
Best Camo patterns for Spring Vs. Fall? I'm going to do some scouting up at White...

Hi all, got lucky and drew a Dunn Forest turkey permit. Went out this morning and saw a ton of turkeys near the 400 Road gate but it seemed they were all smart enough to be feeding in the safety zone. Did a good bit of walking on the east side of the Forest but I didn’t find a good spot for a...

From what I can tell, most Turkey hunters use callers, blinds, decoys, etc. Are most of these practices necessary for consistent kills? I would like to hear what others do.
I've kept it in the garage for a long spell, and just don't need it collecting dust. If anyone wants it in So Or, Let me know.
You could use it for any manner of things.
A sport I'd like to get into is metallic shooting, both handgun and rifles. I read a book about it last year and started doing informal shooting of said on our home range. There is something strangely satisfying about watching the little chicken, turkey, pig, and ram figures get knocked over...
It's that time of year. Let's hear your nominations for who the biggest turkey is this year.
Rules... meh? Just keep it clean. Jocularity rules the day.
Sorry for the last minute notice but the Hillsboro Elks are having the annual turkey shoot tomorrow. All are welcome to come out. Proceeds benefit the lodges annual Christmas project. Raffle tickets will be available at the event.
Still not feeling great so I stayed close to home but did bag some turkey - Portland Style:p
I am going out to check a potential hunting area tomorrow so I'm hoping to have a few grouse to bring home - although if I see any elk I'll still calll it a win:D.
Hey Everyone! I just found this forum on Google while looking for new hunting grounds.
My name is Cody and I'm a recent graduate of Oregon State. I have always hunted on lumber company, but as you probably know they are all starting to require permits to hunt now.
Do any of you know about good...
I'll be heading out I-84 in Oregon in early May and could potentially squeeze in a morning turkey hunt. I don't typically hunt that area. If you know of public land in the stretch from Pendleton to Ontario that holds gobblers, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks in advance.
