History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. Events occurring before written record are considered prehistory. It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Scholars who write about history are called historians.
History can also refer to the academic discipline which uses a narrative to examine and analyse a sequence of past events, and objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect that determine them. Historians sometimes debate the nature of history and its usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present.
Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surrounding King Arthur), are usually classified as cultural heritage or legends, because they do not show the "disinterested investigation" required of the discipline of history. Herodotus, a 5th-century BC Greek historian is considered within the Western tradition to be the "father of history", and, along with his contemporary Thucydides, helped form the foundations for the modern study of human history. Their works continue to be read today, and the gap between the culture-focused Herodotus and the military-focused Thucydides remains a point of contention or approach in modern historical writing. In Asia, a state chronicle, the Spring and Autumn Annals was known to be compiled from as early as 722 BC although only 2nd-century BC texts survived.
Ancient influences have helped spawn variant interpretations of the nature of history which have evolved over the centuries and continue to change today. The modern study of history is wide-ranging, and includes the study of specific regions and the study of certain topical or thematical elements of historical investigation. Often history is taught as part of primary and secondary education, and the academic study of history is a major discipline in university studies.

I have a pretty unique item. A WWII era pillowcase made from parachute silk. Wartime rationing caused many fabrics, especially silk, to be pretty scare. GI's would save silk from their parachutes to send home to their lovers for everything from pillowcases to wedding dresses.
This is a nice...
Someone I was helping move gave these to me years ago. I guess he thought I would want them for some reason. I don't have a use for them, but maybe you do or someone you know would. I can't sell them anywhere else apparently. It's part of US history, get over it. Take it or leave it...
Gday Folks
Next up in reducing a bunch or my gear is some of my book collection, you will have to pickup in the Cornelius, OR area and as the title says they are free for the next person to enjoy! I'll only have this up for a week or so and then I'll probably donate elsewhere.
Hey Folks,
I have two Finnish M40/55 "Stahlhelm" helmets. These were made by Germany on the exact same machines, and often by the same people, as the German military Stahlhelm from WWII. These are iconic and classic looking helmets. Apart from a liner rivet they are exactly the same as the...

Interesting history and design, despite the political association.
Parenthetically, Francoist Spain also had a similar youth organization (Frente de Juventudes). At least one photo I've seen of them shows youths carrying old Remington rolling blocks. (This particular formation may be the...
The latest In Range TV Q&A was, candidly, pretty bad. There was, however, a good question asked: "What is your take on the role of weapons and firearms in the history of civil rights or what sorts of changes over time do you see in their use within the civil rights movements in your knowledge...

I don't have a personal stake in whether Confederate memorials stay or go. My southern ancestors lived in a pro-abolitionist, pro-union part of eastern Tennessee and, according to census records, never owned slaves. Except for my great-grandmother's great-uncle-—who was conscripted into the...
Hey Folks,
My favorite rifle is my CMP M1 Garand Special. It's a mix of parts and a 308 barrel. The receiver and bolt are post war...However the entire trigger group, and the Op Rod, is from 1940-1941. Was my trigger group at Bastogne? Or maybe on Iwo Jima? Perhaps my grandfather carried part...

My grandmother told me her and grandfather were a small community Christmas party. Music was playing on the radio when it was interrupted by the announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The party packed up and everybody went home.
The next day my oldest uncle went to town and joined the navy...
So, I finished the first book, and started the second, of the three part series "The Hot War" by Harry Turtledove. It got me to thinking of how I enjoy alternative history, but haven't read enough of said genre. It thought I'd toss it out there for discussion: what are some of your favorite...
