Huh? According to their website they can. What am I missing:huh:

Oh, wait, I found it. I did not realize that the target version of the mini could not shoot 5.56. I just thought they were all the same. Thanks for teaching me something.

The problem with 5.56 in a .223 chamber is the OAL. In theory a heavy grain 5.56, (longer bullet) could possibly be pushed into the leade of the barrel when chambered. This may cause a over pressure and split the case or blow the primer. I have never heard of a actual ka boom from this.

Lifted directly from the Ruger website FAQ section:

Can I shoot 5.56 NATO ammunition in my Mini-14 or Ranch Rifle?
With the exception of the Mini-14 Target Rifle, which accepts only .223 Rem. ammunition, .223 Rem. and 5.56 NATO can be used in all Mini-14 rifles and Ranch Rifles.
Please note that "Military Surplus" 5.56mm NATO can vary greatly in its quality and consistency.
