I have a new model Vanguard said to produce 1" groups. I am wanting a scope with a mil-dot reticle and target turrets for ranges out to 500 yards. I'm thinking $600 or less for the scope and not less than a 4 x 16 scope. Any recommendations would be very helpful. Thanks. tkdguy
I have been wanting to get this for a while, but it keeps getting pushed down the list. Consistently great reviews plus no questions asked warranty. Not a traditional mil-dot reticle but hash marks instead on the 6-24x50. BDC on the 4-14x44.
A vortex viper PST 4-16x50 with a second focal plane will run just above $600. The first focal plane is about $200-300 more. I have the 6-24X50 FFP and it is very nice.
Check out Leupold's Custom Shop. They can build you an optic with the reticle you want (in most cases) AND will even build you a custom CDS dial for your rifle/load combination. You should be able to get get a VX-3 4 - 14 for right around your budget. Plus they are offering $100 off on VX-3's currently.
I started buying Sightron SII Big Sky scopes instead of Leupolds lately. My newest one is a SIIBSS 6.5-20x50 with MOA2 reticle. It goes to the range for the first time this upcoming weekend. Check them out for another option.
I'm a big Sightron fan too. Have five total including two 8-32x SIII models. One is a mil-dot and the other is a 1/8 target dot. Both are great scopes but I like the finer aiming point with the target dot. The reticule on the mil-dot is thicker than I now like. This scope was on sale during the pre-holiday periord on one of the websites for under $700, which was a steal. Be patient if you can...they always come on sale at some point.
At your price point and even under be sure to consider the Sightron SII 6-24x. Big Sky model or the plain SII model. Both offered in Mil-dot. If you don't plan to use a mil-dot to calculate distances I would consider another reticule though.
I keep getting more powerful scopes. Use to think 24x was enough until I got the 32x. I now have a 55x. I use them at 100 and 200 yards mostly. When I have time I will be using the 32x dot and 55x at 600 yards. I also like the 32x dot scope on sage rats at 300 yards.
I have two Vanguard rifles. You will really like it. Very accurate and reliable. Triggers are not the best but a decent gunsmith can clean them up so they break cleaner and at a lighter weight.
