Different people have different priorities. If push comes to shove and the rule stands... I would have done exactly the same. I rather spend a bit more on my firearm than have it regulated, stamped, use restricted and joining the registered masses. Not to mention hurting it's resellability.

To each their own. Justify compliance as much as you like... I will always opt on the side of freedom.
