Default Would you be ready if this happened in your area?

I have been watching with great interrest the Civil Unrest and Riots happening in The Middle East, Europe and now England! I have to wonder if with all the Turmoil and Uncertainly in our great Country today, could it happen here?

If so would you be ready? Do you enough "Like Minded Friends" to band together and survive?

    Just Something to Think About!!!!

SmittyFreedom has a taste, that those who have never fought for it, will never know!

Although I live in an urban area, (SW Portland), my house is far enough off the beaten track, (flag lot, crazy one lane steep staircase down to it), that I don't feel too threatened by urban unrest.
I keep enough preps for me and mine to be reasonably secured for a week or two, with a fall out location just outside of Salem, (good friends, like minded people with some property in Turner).
So, sufficeth to say, let them riot and burn...we will be OK.

I have plenty of like minded friends.

Gaston, Beretta, Colt, Sturm, Ruger, Smith, Frank, Wesson, Mossberg AND sons. All with their own group of friends, Sellier and Bellot.

This is an armed city, civil unrest would be a lot different here. However, New York City and Chicago will be really bad, wouldn't want to be there.

About the only 'Civil Unrest' we might experience in Lapine is if the stores ran out of Busch Lite.

Yea pretty sure "civil unrest" in downtown Silverton would be greeted by a few guys coming out of Mac's and Pudge's maybe Your Break taverns and watching until the first loggers pickup or member of the bedroom communities SUV's got bummed into then all **** would break loose with the 1/2 dozen civil unresters being beat senseless. Luckily the Silverton Police would be safe while they eat one of their 4 meals a shift at the HOME PLACE.

By the time any unrest would make it the 14 blocks from downtown to my house if there was anything left of them if any one of the unresters had been in town for more then a few years the group would pass quietly past my house hoping that crazy guy that makes knives wouldn't come out and scare them. (I quit making knives for a living in 1996 and still constantly have to deal with someone asking me about it) Seams Custom Knifemakers have a reputation as someone not to screw with.

What is interesting is the cause of the unrest. Brittian is a socialist country that pays people to stay home and be lazy. For them to rise up against their paymaster makes you wonder what the real agenda is. Who is stirring up these losers?

Do we have the same kind of losers in the USA? You bet we do. However they are in the big cities where they can live and leech off the work of others. You never see this scum riot in small town America, there isn't enough of em yet.

i feel pretty safe from these kinds of things although, if it were to happen, i think the flame would be quickly extinguished and the pot would cease to boil

Riots in Britain don't really surprise me. These people riot over soccer games. Rubber bullets, bean bag rounds and tasers. If they tried that type of poop here it would be a different story.

What is stirring them up is ignorance and frustration. Those elements are growing here. And while small town American MIGHT be immune for a while, once the flow of food stops things will go south in a hurry.

i feel like civil unrest is unlikely to hit me too hard...I live on some acreage in a semi-rural area a decent drive and a ridiculously far walk from portland. I work 14 miles from home in a portland suburb. That would be my weak point....my daily commute to work. Once I get to work I'm pretty safe there; and there are multiple exit points from my building.

So if it's JUST civil unrest we're talking about I'm pretty OK. Now if we're talking about widespread panic due to natural disaster, lack of food, water etc then the portland mob MIGHT make it out to our place. Maybe.... If we're at the point that the flow of food, goods, gas & supplies to Portland has STOPPED without a light at the end of the tunnel....then we are all pretty screwed and I don't think anybody is really ever SAFE again after that. Some may be better off than others; but nobody is really immue...except maybe an elite upper crust of survivalists with "MTV Cribs" style fallout shelters....

Hey- I just thought of a great pitch for a reality TV show..... "Pimp My Bunker"..... How do you think that'd be for OPSEC?

Although the persistent atrophy of states’ rights is among the causes of many problems from which discontent arises, that atrophy does not itself seem to concern great numbers of citizens. It is also a reason why a civil war is unlikely: states now are much weaker than were those that seceded in 1861. Then, the states were considered far more than now as sovereign countries. Before and during the war, many of the South considered "United States" to be a plural expression. Hence, it was often said that the United States "are," rather than "is." When the country was viewed as a consortium of separate and sovereign entities, the plural usage was grammatically correct. The plural form has fallen into disuse; I still use it as a reminder that the states retain the authority not delegated to the federal government even though they have forfeited much of the power to exercise it.
If you want your "federal Funding" you will never speak of these things again.

What prevents another Civil War here isn't the Army or the fact that we hold a higher loyalty to our Nation than to our State of residence, it's ignorance and apathy.

There is some speculation that someone wanted new tactics passed and that MAYBE someone in authority had hired thugs to run a muck.Apparently it's been known to happen there
Hey the hooligans will do it for free.all they have to do is pay them to direct it in a certain neighborhood.

I feel safe up here.If you look at the thread from a month or so ago about an American over in the middle east(drawing a blank right now)Anyway,he said if you went a half mile down the road there wasn't anything happening.Farther and you couldn't see the smoke
Up here it will be Seattle and Portland.South will,of course be SF and LA

The flash mobbers suck, but do we need a good cleansing like in some of the other countries? A little slap to wake us up?

Close in inner city urban Portland here. Living in the worst place imaginable for this kind of a thing. It would roll right over the top of us and would be very tricky to deal with, if at all given how fast this kind of thing can develop. Not too concerned about the empty shell of a ransacked house we will leave behind, but please keep a shovel handy my brothers, for I would hope that afterwards one of you would kindly bury my wife and I so as to stop the stench of our rotting bodies once the mob has had their way with us.

    Cheerio!

For those who think really small rural towns are immune, I'd think again. Two things. 1. If the grocery shelves are empty, you don't know what the "best" of people will do. 2. It's surprising how many people in those small towns live there because living is relatively cheap, but they are on welfare and food stamps. You can bet they aren't stocked up on supplies.

I wouldn't let my guard down. It takes only one or two guys slipping around your house at night with the intent to rob you to put you in real danger.

I agree with your assessment. Small towns aren't immune.

No, I don't think small towns are immue from all social/political problems. I was just responding to the specific situation of the thread.....which is basically riots/protesters gone violent. That kinda stuff pretty much always starts in cities. For it to spread out to small towns there would HAVE to be a disruption of services such as no food in stores, no gas at gas stations, electric grid goes down for extensie amount of time...these kind of things would definitely affect everyone. But the specific situation described in this post is most likely to start in a big city and fizzle out a few days later (as it did in London).

I believe that if suddenly due to one of several possibilities, welfare and food stamps were cut off, it would start in small towns just as fast as big cities. It would just be easier to control riots. Hungry burglars and robbers sneaking around, not so good.

If on the other hand the grocery stores were empty and even those with money couldn't get food - watch out.

If all food supplies were cut off in the big cities, I don't agree that the riots would be over in a few days unless a lot of people died - by the millions. Even most wealthy people aren't prepared for a one-year food shortage.

We don't know what even "good" people would do if they couldn't feed themselves or their children.

In every local disaster we've had, the feds and states have been slow and inept at providing aid, and that's just a relatively small area like Katrina where the rest of the nation was fine and help should have been swift and abundant. If the disaster was economic and nationwide, there is no hope for help.
