Some of our storage was getting a little old by this year, mostly canned soup, veggies, beans, pumpkin, etc.. we bought it all on sale several years ago.. and as we used it our budget then allowed us to complete a few firearms projects we needed, and get me through having to shut my business down. Storage is good for more than pure survival, it can help get you through tight finances and loss of income. I remember an old story about a guy named Joseph and 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine..

Having said that a nice large garden is also a big help in such times. When you have time to spare due to being out of work, reloading components that you have gathered in good times can then be loaded up and stowed away. Being organized and having a vision is essential

An olde-tyme backpacker's emergency ration is JELLYBEANS. These are basically solid sugar but jelled inside a protective coating of sugar, already packed inside sealed plastic bags they seem to keep forever unless they get actually wet inside. Some are made with real fruit juice and have some vitamin nutritional value. The day after Easter jellybeans are WAY cheap at all of the food and drug stores.............................elsullo

add a little molasses to white sugar and you have brown sugar.
    No joke it's a baker's trick.

agreed, sugar is a great commodity to have on hand; and cheap and easy to store since it lasts pretty much forever.

We have 40 lbs sugar and 40 lbs honey stored. The honey is more than 3x as expensive though...so sugar is a great choice. Honey takes up less space per pound though, so if you have more $$ than storage space honey is a great way to store your "sugary substance" needs without needing a separate warehouse!
