I've been getting a number of emails and PMs regarding the DH1 Qualification course and the "Silver" Level. Also I've been asked about "how many typically pass."

I'll attempt to answer these questions here to ease some minds.

The qualification is based upon the same as what Oregon Law Enforcement Officers and Corrections Officers must do every 6 months in order to carry a defensive handgun. We even use the same target/simulated threat. At OFA we believe every person who owns a handgun for personal defense should be able to walk up and pass at the Gold Level on demand either right or left handed - anytime. For us it is our standard. But remember in this TCGC DH1 class we're going to spend an entire day preparing you for this qualification course! So unless you're showing up with a lot of prior unproductive and ineffective habits (which take more than one class to undo and reprogram) and you're not extremely fatigued this course of fire is "do-able." But let's get real...many of us have been shooting for years and have built up many ineffective counter-productive habits and techniques - particularly incorrect sight picture, flinching, jerking and other trigger related issues that sometimes take a while to re-program.

It is always hard to say who can pass it and who can't but I'd say on average 10 to 20% score at the Bronze Level, 60-70% score at the silver level (which is the minimum needed for the IPSC & Action Range certification) and the remaining 10 to 20% score at the Gold (Highest) level. Everyone is different and so it is difficult to give averages as I've seen some classes where almost everyone go gold but I've seen a number of classes where the class really struggled.

Our goal is to help you pass! We've got an extremely experienced and competent staff. We've been doing this for over 15 years as "OFA" and many of us years more before OFA.

The qualification course requires you to get all 25 rounds inside a very-very generious area on a simulated human torso measuring 18" x 30.5" Here is the actual target minus a pistol painted on it to simulate a threat.

The silver area is the outer boundary line. The head does not count. So south or down from the dark neck line to the top of the DPSST round blue logo on the bottom and then the two outer horizontal lines. The center “bottle looking outline” is the gold standard. This, from our perspective is VERY-VERY generous. The gold in this class is considerably easier than the gold is later courses which are an 8” circle and the silver is about the size of this gold.

    The Qualificaiton course itself includes:

At 10 yards moving to protective cover and firing from behind cover
At 7 yards presenting from the holster and then shooting at one simulated threat
At 5 yards shooting then moving while completing a combat reload then continue engaging a threat
At 3 yards single handed shooting from both the strong and support hand
At 2 yards draw while taking a step back and shooting

Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you have more questions or concerns. We'd love to see you in the class. It has been very popular and the reviews from TCGC members have been excellent.

The office called me today and said this class is just about full. Because our schedule and TCGC's schedule are both full this may be the last time we offer this class for a while. If you're wanting an OFA DH1 close to the metro area and/or wanting qualification for the Action Range then you'd better jump on this while you can.

Please contact the office for info or registration as I'm training on the road and not always accessible to a decent computer.

Last call for DH1 @ TCGC. Yea, it might be wet, cold and a bit snowy but it is going to be a lot of fun, challenging and a great day together. Remember if you successfully qualify at the Silver level then you're eligible for orientation for the Action Range.

Between our schedule and TCGC's it may be a while before we get back up again for this class. Don't assume we'll be back when it is warmer...we might be but who knows when?
