    Something that always puzzled me, since Cinco de Mayo is not really a Mexican holiday, it marks the winning of a single skirmish, the battle of Puebla, a province (state) in Mexico. The winning of this battle is significant only in Puebla and is celebrated only in Puebla and a few other places in Mexico. For some unknown reason, maybe an excuse to drink tequila or just to party, it is widely celebrated in the United States. So why are Mexicans so intent on celebrating such a holiday in America, when they were citizens of Mexico it was not a holiday, but now that they are "citizens" of the United States it is considered a major cultural holiday.

    In my opinion, if they are truly citizens of the United States then their pledge of alligence should be to only one flag, the American flag. Immigrants do not assimilate into American society by refusing to speak english, paying homage to a foreign flag, nor demanding Americans change their way of life to accommodate the immigrant. Cultural diversity is not the answer, it can only spell the demise of the United States.

    You're largely correct, with the exception that last sentence, it seems like a complete non-sequitur. If cultural diversity will "spell the demise" of America, as you put it, then what is the one culture that we should all have? I know, the simple answer would be, "American culture of course!" But what is that, exactly? What is the one religion we should all be required adhere to? What is the one kind of music we should all listen to exclusively? What about the one could kind of foods we should only be allowed to eat?

    The culture they should submit to is following the constitution and the laws set forth by this nation. The law isn't diverse, it is the same for all and we must all agree to live by it to hold the country together. Those who come here breaking our laws are simply un-American and should leave.

    I agree. But when one makes a general statement suggesting that cultural diversity is an evil that will destroy this country, that's a completely different matter. There is more to culture than its attitudes towards the constitution and the law of the land, for example certain religious/spiritual views, concepts of family values, even things like food and music are all often strongly tied to culture. My point is that one can easily be a law-abiding American, with utmost respect for the constitution and loyalty to the United States, without having to be an utterly homogenized, uniform mass with only one "culture."

    I'll be damned. It appears the ACLU has actually weighed in on the side of the 5 kids who were sent home for wearing the flag.

    "It was censorship to tell the students not to wear the American flag shirts and those are rights protected by the California education code and both the California and U.S. Constitution," said Julia Harumi Mass from the ACLU.

    Awesome news right there!!!!

    I work for the fifth largest school district in WA. state, and I'll tell ya, some of the things that are allowed to happen is just amazing.
    I remember back when Obama was campaigning, one teacher called out a young girl(4th grader)because she said she was for McCain. Possibly the teacher was reprimanded behind the scenes(I doubt it!), but nothing was done officially.
    The girls parents were so irate they pulled her out of the district and are now homeschooling.
    Two friends of mine who both work for the same district as I do homeschool their kids. She's a teacher and says she would not even consider letting her kids go to public schools. What a sad commentary on the state of our school system.

    The essential goals of the ACLU are embodied in the U.S. Bill of Rights which, in summary, provided for:

    * Freedom of Speech and Press

    * Freedom of Religion and Separation of Church and state

    * Due Process of Law

    * Privacy

    * Equal Protection Under the Law

    * Freedom from Cruel and Unusual Punishment

    Ha ha. That's kind of what I thought. For your info though, I was reading recently that there is a power struggle inside of the ACLU right now. I guess there is a large part that agrees with the second amendment and wants to fight for it. That would be very helpful if they used their power for good. lol

    Where did you read about the power struggle inside the ACLU? I have heard the same thing, but haven't seen any clear documentation or articles. Please post a link if you have one.

    I didn't read about it online. I am pretty sure I read about it in a magazine, but I can't remember which one. It wasn't more than 6 or 7 months ago though. If I see it I will tell you.

    We home school for that specific reason. We used to have our kids in the Seattle school district, but they were so anti gun and pro socialism that we couldn't stomach it. Not to mention their inability to actually teach material that matters, like math. The last class our youngest was in at 4th grade decided to teach progressive math for a semester, instead of building on the foundations and making sure the kids knew how to add, subtract, divide and multiply they spent half the year blazing from basic number blocks to intro to trigonometry. Then his teacher was some crazy racist troll that treated all the white kids like they weren't even in her class. Wouldn't answer their questions or help them learn anything.

    We use a curriculum created by some university prof of physics from Komiefornia called the Robinson Curriculum. It's real good. Has books for him to read about our founding fathers by people who actually knew them. Also has other books from back in the 18th, and 19th centuries. It also uses the Saxon Math books which are great tools for learning math.

    Good on you Celtic Armory
    I'm curious, how old are your kids, and do you ever plan to have them go to public school?
    The friends I mentioned are debating sending them to high school. Their thinking is the kids are well established in their learning capability and wouldn't get involved with bad kids since their moral charactor is already pretty well established.
    Just something they are considering and since they are reading this thread maybe you could share your thoughts.
    thanks, tom

    My wife's older boy is 14, lives with his dad and goes to public school in Port Orchard and complains about problems in the school, but then again he is a problem in the school. Her younger boy (who I consider my own and home school) is 12. We may have him go to HS out here, but want to make sure he's actually prepared.

    We're considering HS so that he can have some kind of social life. It's hard for him being the only kid here and no other kids in the neighborhood (we're a bit rural). But we want to make sure that he has enough education to have him breeze through HS and enough of a moral foundation to not be suckered into the socialism that is part of the school curriculum.

    Most of the studies on this subject indicate that any advantage either a home-schooled or private-schooled child may get over their public-schooled peers ends at around the high-school age. What you've done up to that point is instill in them the hard habits of schoolwork, homework, studying, and time-management so sending them to a public high school doesn't necessarily do them any disservice.

    No 2506. That is just another important time in there life where you can make the effort to say close to your children or not. They will make hard decisions in their teenage years and shipping them off to high school can ruin everything that you have instilled in them to that point. That decision need to be made with very serious consideration!
