Thread: Guns 101

Back when I was shopping for engagement rings I was pretty clueless until one salesman noticed my deer in the headlights look and compared the rings to cars. Told me which ones were Yugos, Hondas and Mercedes, etc. As that story went, I bought a Honda ring and she said yes. What does that have to do with guns you say? Well to be honest I’m new to guns and really don’t know a whole lot. I was hoping some of you could give me a rundown of guns compared to cars. Hope I don’t start a Ford verses Chevy thing here but I thought this might be a good way to get a little education.

If you're talking about handguns, I've always compared Glocks to Hondas. Nothing special to look at, but can't beat the reliability.

+1 for Glock if your talking about handguns. A G17 or G19 would be a great gun for a newb.

I would compare a Glock more to my Ford Pickup. Works GREAT.

i'll give it a try:

1911= Mercedes Benz, a new one of the lot fully loaded is going to make you cry when you see the bill. There are some stripped down models that still shoot great, but you won't get the respect unless you spend more than the other guy....or your target's ten ring is gone.

Glock= honda... they're right but i'd have to say more like a cvcc. ugly but useful (gonna catch some flak for that )

Cz's= saab's, well designed... alittle quirk when you get past a basic field strip. but not bmw $

Sigs= bmw...german, awesome, expensive.

HK= audi... german awesome, their #2 doesn't stink.

Ruger= old (your brand here) truck... reliable as all get out, old school classic revolvers, new semi's hyundai's, copies of everything popular but very good in form/function

Taurus= pinto... Great cars until the exploding gas tank fiasco/hoax, the reputations is very polar. love or hate, most of their pistols are pretty good for a decent price

So I guess I have a Kia in my fleet.
High point is considered a low point entry level coupe.

But if you opt for the sport package with sweet rear spoiler and some shiny wheels and upgrade the Kraco radio. You will nearly have a Ford escort.

Or in my case a Dope 995 carbine.

Benjamin,
the generalities work well but as with cars there are also classics and dealers to worry about. Plus guns need to fit your hand/arm/body to be useful a 1911 is almost useless if you are not comfortable shooting it. I personally don't like the fit of most Glocks, even though they are great guns and very reliable. I have a friend who loves the feel of his Taurus, buy what you like the fit and feel of and that fits in your budget. Once you make a decision then do the research to see if the gun is reliable. Also it helps if you have a few friends/associates who own that gun or a similar and will let you shoot said gun.

Did anyone mention the Springfield XD line? I put them on a par with Glock, but with a different feel altogether. Boils down to personal preference imho. Very dependable and affordable. Certainly a step up from Taurus.

Everyone is forgetting about the wonderful world of Rifles!
.22 (Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 or a million others) is like a drivers permit, you need it before you get your license

SKS/AK/AR is your car. I've been thinking and I've given up on comparisons
SKS-cheapest, very sturdy and reliable but not as flashy.
AK-reliable, least accurate cost a little more but can often be the best option because of price for the gun and ammo
AR-premium, Usually billed as not reliable when dirty (please no ak-ar fights, I said usually!). Most accurate. Most expensive and ammo is more. but for many people this is the best choice.

And Shotguns, Bolt-actions, the equally Wonderful World of Surplus rifles, FN FAL, Revolvers...the list of cars to drive is long.

The only part of this ramble that answers your question well is.
Get a .22.
Learn to shoot it, break it apart, clean it.
Then You will be the one to choose your next gun, I don't think anyone knows if you really need a sub-compact, Hummer or Prius, or should tell you, a .22 is an easy entrance to firearms before you make your own decision.

Gunner you should bw ashamed of yur self "saying Glock in the same sentence as XD" XD rocks. The XD was my first pistol. I have burned hundereds of rounds through it without cleaning. fired 300 rounds non stop ezcwpt for reloading the mags, left it dirty and laying in the floor of the car getting covered in dog hair and other daily dirt. Pulled it out and bang bang, dead paper.
Point is it is a great first gun. I am specically saying the XD-40 is, never shot the XD-45. I do love the feel of my Kimber.

The XD 40 absolutely sucks and is butt ugly compared to my Glock 23.

Think of an XD 40 as training wheels, getting ready to own a real gun - a Glock.
