The same reason people by corvettes when a honda civic will last just as long and do the job. They are frickin cool and people like to buy nice things and spend money when they can.

Half the time I carry a Benchmade Auto that retails for $250 (I paid $100), and half the time I carry a S&W H.R.T. which retails for $60 (I paid $12 at Big 5). Both of them work the same, though the cool factor of the Benchmade is ten times that of the S&W.

When is a knife worth $399.99???
    NEVER!

    Knowing that I might be bringing a lot of hate-mail onto my doorstep here;

I personally believe that there is no reason a knife should ever cost upwards of $399.99 (I.E. Benchmade Infidel). It is not that I cannot afford it, so please don't play that losing battle with me, it is simply due to an extremely large market of knifes between only $50-$100 which would last longer than you would live and provide you with everything you need out of it.

    So up for debate now:

Is it worth paying that much money for a knife and why?
Funny, when I read the title to this thread, I said to myself: "...uhh, when the knife is a Benchmade Infidel." I guess not everyone feels the way I do about that knife.

I have carried a Benchmade Griptilian every day for about five years. I like the knife so much that I give one as a gift whenever I have a chance. I think I paid $70 for mine. But, if I lost mine and the only price I could get a new one for was $400, I'd seriously consider paying the asking price (Though, I'd probably stop giving it as a gift).

I would have to say its the quality you pay for and the job you think it may have to perform. I carry a $5 gun show folding knife every day and it performs mundane box cutting and small pry bar use like a champ. Would I expect to be able to hang from a tree using it as a piton? No. Some people want the best even if they don't "need" the best. I just had a little debate last night with a buddy over his departments upcoming purchase of HK 416's. My main thing was they aren't going to be full auto so why do you need the piston? But I think most people would agree they are one of the best...

you can pay $285 for one and save yourself $100.00

There are knives in the $1,000's and they are not for everyone. Our knife prices are from $.99 to $700+ so there is a knife for everyone. They may have to set the price to make sure that it covers R&D and make a profit. You are also paying for the name on the blade. Look at micro-tech and they are not cheap either. Some customers purchase what they need, and others buy one for what they want.

I have a few Randall's I wouldn't let go for $400. To me, It's just nice to have something that on one hand, is a really good tool, & on another, is a work of art.

I can see spending $399+ for a knife. It really depends on the quality of the knife, the materials, craftsmanship, etc. I've bought a number in the $200+ range. The Infidel doesn't do it for me, but there are handful of others that do. Some of the new Fallkniven 3G steel knives are pushing that range. Then there are _loads_ of custom knives. Many could be passed down for generations if taken care of...

How much is a registered transferable M16 auto sear worth? It is only about $100 worth of steel and machining.

Try finding one for sale at $100. You may be looking for quite some time.

The value of something is based on what people will pay. If the consensus is $400 for an infedel, that is it's value. You don't have to like it, but that is the case.

What is the value of designer clothes, or super cars, or real estate in Beverly Hills. It doesn't make sense to me, but that doesn't affect the legitamacy of the price listed.

When I read the title, I too thought the Benchmade Infidel, and I was correct. They are sweet knives, but they have too much wobble when they are extended, and are more of the cool factor than being rock solid. I personally would love to have an auto Benchmade. Currently I'm a poor college student, but one day I will have one. Oregon is the only state the citizens can purchase legally auto knifes. Although im not sure if we can carry them legally. All other states need to have a Signed papers saying there LE/GOV.

Price of M16 auto sear, I would say about $10K and up.

You gotta love the luxury elite products: Surefire, HK, Ferrari...

I carry the Cold Steel Brave Heart daily. It's a $70 knife that I have yet to do any type of damage to the blade. I abuse it and it still sharpens well and hasn't broken it's tip. I also own the Cold Steel SRK. I've cut through small dead trees with it before. I think Cold Steel is a brand that figured out the right balance between good quality and price.

I think I feel the same way about my "old-timer" but would save the money to buy a new 1911 1st.

    Default Everything's Negotiable

    So...

There you are, walking down a poorly lit street, in a rough neighborhood, without your CCW, and up walks a guy that looks a lot like a one man collection agency.

He whips out a Winchester Lockblade with a 3" blade just like you saw in WalMart last week for $5.

Heck, it isn't even considered a weapon in most states.

He starts cleaning his fingernails with the blade about the time he asks you if you like fine cuttlery and might be interested in buying his knife for $400.

I say, at the very least, you could give it a few moments consideration. It might be a good deal.

Of course, with my luck, I would buy the knife and he would immediately offer to sell me a Beretta 92fs for an additional $1,000.

Values are best discovered by accepting what an enlightened buyer and an enlightened seller will agree on considering the environment they are in.

Why is an AK worth twice as much or more in the United States as it is in Afghanistan when the overseas models are so much more likely to be full auto, and to be depended on in life or death situations over there?

Really depends on what your wanting in a knife. I've paid more than that for Infi. I wouldn't spend that much on a Infidel though.
