Thread: Ignoramus, reporting for duty.

Hi there! Haven't actually ever fired a firearm of any sort, but I'll be buying one at the upcoming portland gun show. I'll be going with a more knowledgeable friend of mine. My fiance is having trouble with a stalker, so I thought it would be wise for both of us to be armed.

I think your decision is wise. Please take the time to make certain you both become competent with your weapons.

I am aware. I will be spending as much time as possible on it. She worked at a gun range for years, so she'll need a bit less practice I think.

I friend of mine was in that situation many years ago with his new wife. Scary situation. Be careful, and as others have said, train with your new weapon.

Welcome, please pursue all legal avenues in helping your problem out of your lives. That being said, you never know how unstable someone with an obsession is. As a couple I believe you are making a prudent decision. As stated previously, take the time to learn as much about the operation of whatever firearm you choose. Also take the time to review what your legal boundries and ramifications may be, even though you are surely justified in arming yourselves, law enforcement at times can be relentless in what they consider to be the pursuit of justice. If you do not have legal counsel already to help you deal with this percieved threat, get some. Going by yourself to your local law enforcement for help can prove to be ineffective for this type of problem, the assistance of a lawyer can be invaluable in stating your case against this person to them. They will tend to take notice if they believe they can be held liable for not doing enough.

Oh, we have definitely pursued all legal avenues. This guy just won't quit. Not right in the head. Thus the firearms.

As many have said, know your rights, train, train and more training. Perhaps find a local IDPA or IPSC group, and take classes on defensive practices with a firearm. Having a hammer doesn't make you a carpenter. Don't under estimate this at all.

But also, don't let someone else consume your life with their actions.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the world of firearm ownership...even if I am a bit premature (not the first time I have had that issue). Good luck at the gun show. One thing to remember though, people that are "knowledgeable" about firearms tend to be most knowledgeable about their own personal preferences. Remember that your own preferences are more important.
