18inch bull barrel (DPMS) or a 20inch heavy barrel (Rock Rivers)?*
Which would be better for 500 yards and under?

don't matter much. They are only "so" accurate. They 2 inches aren't going to make much of a difference in accuracy. It would drop about 100 fps. Not enough to notice. It's a weight and length question at this point. If you want to drop some weight and gain some mobility, go with the 18 inch. If you don't care about weight or length, then go with the 20.
