it is LIKE dude. you LIKE have to get a clue. Cause it is you know, LIKE really important that you check with the cop shop to find out as different LIKE places, LIKE you know, do things differnetly.
I've got a good story for you. I used to own a boatyard in Vallejo, California back from 81-89.
Two inspectors with the City Police at the time were friends of mine.
So you know, Vallejo is one tough town. Lots of gun crime.
So, these two cops come to me and ask if I would take them, and about 8 garbage cans worth of seized guns out into the bay to dump them.
"Sure", I said. So out into the Carquinez Straits we went. We dumped all of the guns into the swift, and deep waters of the Straits between Crockett and Vallejo.
By the way... There wasn't a decent gun in the lot. Those never made it on to my boat.
I'd imagine there is no dumping of guns into the bay anymore...
Every department is different, and typically dictated by the politics of said department and/or its community.
As an FFL holder, I've purchased guns from law enforcement agencies, but many have them destroyed.
I'm guessing based on current Federal and State laws that an agency could not sell directly to the public without some long and
drawn out process of brokering them through an FFL.
Cheaper for them to destroy them or sell them to an FFL, and back to the distributor where you will find them for sale again like LEEDS (Leedway) in Tacoma, Wa, and in Oregon City, Or.
Like the first response said- ask your local people, everyone does it different. I asked my locals and they said all seized handguns are destroyed (if not needed for evidence in a case, etc.) but they throw 20+/- rifles&shotguns into loose bundles, then auction them off to local FFL's who have applied to be able to bid on them. Odd that they decide to sell the longguns but send the handguns off to be destroyed. Probably more politics than common sense on that.
Call the cop shop, thats probley the only place you`ll get an answer
They melt them down and then turn them into new police officers.
Matt
Dan-Dee sales, right here on this site sells police confiscated guns.
But department or city/county policy dictates that they must be auctioned, so he has used gunbroker listings.
He has posted alerts here when he does it.
Maybe they'll chime in here.
Yeah gunfix,I have gone into LEEDs when he just bought a ship load of guns, both police and confiscated guns.
I bet I looked like a kid in a candy store, everything you could imagine on that counter.
The shop that shut down bought the police guns from P.A.I think he retired with about 10 Beretta 96s
