Thread: mailing a rifle

a friend at works dad just passed, and left his old rifle to said friend. dad lived on east coast and well he is in Oregon. He dont have the means to travel out there so how would he get the rifle? his sister is their to ship it out. will it have to be FFL on both ends?
any help would be great

The individual at the far end can ship it to a FFL here. A FFL at the far end is not needed. When picking the local FFL, confirm he/she will accept shipments from individuals. There's no law about it, but, some don't like to do it. Shipment must occur via UPS, FedEX and the like. Individuals may not use the USPS. Handguns go priority, long arms can go ground.

You are allowed to "ship to yourself" without a FFL, but, it doesn't seem to apply in this case.

If it is a takedown type, only the part with a serial number is the "firearm". All the other pieces can be shipped without a FFL.

Depends, if you can find an FFL to accept a shipment from a party, then all they need to do is pack it up really good and ship it to the FFL.

A rifle as he is talking about CAN be shipped thur the post office by an individual to a FFL....

If the gun is under C&R listing just get your cuuffer and have it shipped direct.

Correct rifles and shotguns can be shipped from an individual to an FFL via USPS.

U.S.Postal Service is GREAT for mailing rifles (never handguns)! It is the safest shipper, and the cheapest, and you can buy insurance and get a delivery receipt very cheaply. Their simple rules, which not all postal counter clerks might know: is that the gun must be at least partially disassembled with the bolt and magazine separate from the rifle in the package; no ammo may be in the package; no markings on the outside of the package can indicate that it IS a gun; your return address must be on the package; and you must TELL the clerk these things. Address the package to the name of the person you want it to go to, IN CARE OF the FFL name and address

Be sure that the FFL that you are mailing to will ACCEPT shipment from a private citizen---some deal only with other FFLs and never with individuals and might refuse your mailing. Not a bad idea to include a xerox of your adult ID and the address of the person and the FFL inside the box so there is no confusion when the FFL opens it............................elsullo
