Thread: 380 XTP 90 gr load

Can someone please give me some suggestions on powders and loads for the Hornaday XTP 90 gr.? Using in a Bersa thunder. Thanks.

Lee's 2nd edition lists 5 powders for this cartridge/bullet.

N320 (vihtavouri) Start 3.0 gr 930 fps Max 3.5 gr 1073 fps .980 Min Oal
N310 Start 2.4 gr 875 fps Max 2.8 gr 1010 fps .980 Min OAL
Accurate #2 3.3 gr 830 fps Max 3.7 gr 930 fps .960 Min OAL
Accurate #5 4.3 gr 837 Max 4.8 gr 920 fps. .960 Min OAl

Vihtavouri powders are not that common on the shelves of local Dealers. If you do elect to use one of them however pay close attention to the Minimum OAL. For some reason this brand of powder tends to build pressure quickly and "too short" rounds do have a tendency to blow out at the head.

My choice for this cartridge would be the Power Pistol. A nice wide range between start and max to allow one to safely work up a load without going over pressure too quickly. Start out at 4 grains and work up after shooting a few rounds. You should be able to reach max or near max in your Bersa without problems.

Power Pistol is also my choice for the "Full Sized 9mm". Just make sure to check your finished round with a "drop test" to make sure it chambers fully, and easily. You can go to a max of .984" and still reliably feed from most .380 mags.

3.2g Titegroup, 90g Hornady XTP, .965 OAL. Shot great out of a Bersa thunder. A bit snappy but not bad and no signs of over pressure
