I took apart a couple cheap clay loads today for the shot (fill .44 shot capsules), and was looking at the empty cases...hmmm.
Turns out a paintball fits snugly in the shot cup...hmmm.
I'm thinking tomorrow I might try to pull the wad and put in a couple grains of Red Dot in place of the factory load.

Before the flames begin no, I have no intention of pointing the 12 at humans.
this is to be for cardboard fun...well, mebbe the occasional feral cat.

I thinik i"d leave the wad in place,keep from 'flame cutting' the paintball. Just spitballin' here,but it makes sense when I say it real fast.

The wads are definitely going to stay in place, I'm only pulling them to replace the powder charge and then putting them back in.
Am using cheap Federal target shells with a "power piston" wad assembly.

You may find that the paintballs will tend to rupture in the bore and nothing will reach the "target". Different acceleration and shock forces in Gas powered Paintball gun than in "explosion powered" shotgun.

Another risk is that the paintball deforms, forming a more than normal gas seal in the bore and you end up with a "jugged" or "banana peeled" barrel.

Be careful.

Will be using minuscule amounts of powder and the ball is in a shotcup.
Am planning to check the bore after each shot.
Powder load will never exceed 6 gr.
I thought about using a little black powder instead but the cleanup would be nasty!
Will be quite careful...don't want to harm the new m887!

You may be suprised at what just the primer will do for propelling. If the paint balls tend to break from shock of powdered load then try filling area around them with sawdust for cushion.

Shots were at 10 yrds at an empty corrugated box.

First shell had 2 grs Red Dot powder:
Primer popped, there was a short delay and a "ploop"
sound, paintball dented the cardboard and bounced off.
As deadeye indicated, I think this was mostly primer as
barrel inspection showed unburned flakes.

Second shell was charged with 4 gr of RD.
No delay, cute little ball of fire at the muzzle (inefficient burn),
paint ball went through cardboard and was found inside box
unbroken.

Third shell loaded with 6 grs RD.
No fireball, quick pop, two more holes in box.
Broken paintball, paint and wadding inside box, back wall dented.
Closer inspection showed that the powerpiston wad had punctured and stuck to the shotcup, probably puncturing the PB as well.



I have purchased a sack of one-piece wadcups with the folding
buffer...I will try these next. I think 6 gr RD is the ticket for this kind of shell.
The pressures in involved seem to be quite low...possibly low enough to
function in a 12-guage marine flare pistol?

May want to get back a little further so the shot cup releases the balls and falls away.

I'll try that next time...if I still get breakage, I'll use some buffering as suggested.

Another tip is to cut the "petals" of the shot cup so they open quicker. If there are 4 petals, split them with some scissors into 8. If 6 then make 12.

Used to do this for Trap Shooting to get the cup free of the shot column quicker. There used to be a shot cup sold under the name "Wind Jammer". They had more "petals" than the usual ones. Would appear to "hang" in the air about 20 feet in front of the barrel when fired.

I'll try this tomorrow afternoon, let you know how it goes...

Another thought:

Cut the shot cup down so it just cradles the paintball. No need for it to extend along the side beyond the max diameter. The shorter the cup the quicker it will separate from the paintball when it leaves the muzzle.

Fun stuff! Some people would just get a paintball gun, LOL.

yea,but this sounds like more fun !!

It does at that.

Mixed results...
The paintballs did just fine on the new wads,
but about 50% still belch muzzle fire after the payload leaves the barrel.
Dirty barrel after 10 shots, lots of unburned powder residue.
The ball and wad is about 75 grains...I think too light to build up pressures for
effective powder burning.
Anything faster than Red Dot out there?
Maybe Clays?
My eight year old granddaughter will really love this if I can get it
to work...last month she popped a half pounder of tanney from a hundred yd (bag rest on truck hood) first shot
with the .243. Has not stopped bragging about it since.

Plus Al Gore would frown upon your carbon footprint from using the CO2... unless of course you paid him for some carbon credits, then you'd be good to go!
