# Thread: How many bullets can you cast from a pound of lead?

1. ## How many bullets can you cast from a pound of lead?

Please forgive. I did a search.

I'm considering getting into bullet casting, especially swc for the 38/357 and TC for the 9mm.

I don't know how to convert to find out how many bullets I could cast with a pound of lead.

I "think" there are 7,000 grains in a pound, but I don't know if that's the same "grain" as in bullet weight. I know it is for powder. ??

If there are 7,000 grains in a pound, then that pound should yield about 46.6666 150 grain bullets less of course lost to dross etc.

Am I close? Are these the right "grain" and "pound" usages?

OK, I'm stupid. I beat you to it.

Thanks.

2. Yes, there are 7000 grains per pound, the grain is a measurement of weight.

3. you have to relize too that lead is really dense and that the amount of 1 lb isnt alot.

yes. the 7000 grains/lb is correct.

So it's true? A pound of lead really does weigh more than a pound of feathers?

yes its true.

6. Gunnar by your own calculations you cans see the bigger the bullet the less per pound.
My one 50 Cal mould will drop a 860 Grainer less than nine per pound. Really makes the old pot run out in a hurry.

Ken.
